TrueBlueFlyer should be qualifying in the top 10 on the grid
Bathurst 12h - 2016

I set two goals for the start of my 2016 marshaling season: Dubai 24h and Bathurst 12h.

Not a lot of hope for getting accepted to Dubai, but the Bathurst application is lodged. I'm researching flights, being so far out gives me time to sign up for bonus frequent flyer miles (because of course I don't have enough).

Who else is going?

If you weren't, I'd encourage you to sign up

There should be no problem with Dubai. Just contact the marshalling team at Dubai Autodrome.

I will on July 5th... I reached out to a contact at Yas who suggested a contact at the Dubai Autodrove (who is away until early July) Hopefully that person responds.

I marshalled the first two Dubai 24hr races and really enjoyed both of them.

well, I am very much looking forward to it if indeed it materializes for me

I had an excellent time volunteering the Gulf 12h at Yas a few years ago

I know of a bunch of Scottish marshals who are making their own way over to Dubai to marshal the 2016 24H. I could find out who their contact at the Autodrome is if you want?

I'm down for the Bathurst 12hr again next year. Did it this year, and it has been one of the highlights of my marshalling year so far.

Just remember that upon landing in Sydney it's near enough to a 3 hour 220km (140 mile) drive to Bathurst so allow a rental car of some form into your planning or buddy with a local.

Also be aware there are toll roads involved so arrange a tolling account with your rental.

I managed to avoid the toll roads going thru town on my last trip to Bathurst in 2013... wouldn't mind buddying up with a local though, would probably save me a few hundred bux.

The first flight on this journey has been booked... Auckland to the Cook Islands. Now I have to work out the other flights around it

Looking forward to Rarotonga... that may be the highlight of this trip more than the racing.

Dubai is looking like a real possibility...

The first reply I got suggested that they won't know until closer to the event date whether or not I could apply because it would depend on the interest from the local marshals that must be accommodated first.

I promised to not waste their time if they feel the event would be oversubscribed and got a reply that there will likely be a spot for me.

So Dubai is probably a definite maybe

Bit OT, but how did you contact Dubai?
I've tried every email on their site and have received no response.

I'd post it publicly, because you know, it'd be helpful information for a few marshals out there, but doing so has caused some people to get all bent out of shape in the past (cause you know, how dare I do that)

so PM me, and I'll send you both e-mail addresses I got for the Autodrome contacts

also look into accommodation in Bathurst early...say 4th Qtr 2015... the :White Elephant" is right at the circuit...

http://www.rydges.com/accommodation/...FQRvvAodZ4gE6g

and if you can buddy-up with some locals that could defray the cost (if necessary)

2 man rooms are coming up at around AU$1,500 per night for a minimum 5 night stay for this years Bathurst 1,000! Thats one of my possible accomodation locations for the 2016 bathurst 1,000 priced out of my budget!

I'm surprised that you're surprised... I'm sure Mandarin Oriental in Singapore goes for as much if not more during the Singapore GP

There are other lodging options...

...that said I keep booking trips leading up to the big one next year, I think my next event of interest will be the "new" Sepang 12h in Malaysia... looking forward to sleeping on the floor in an air conditioned cabin at turn/station 9 with/along side 20+ of my closest Malaysian marshal friends... yay!

we hired a very small camper - i mean VERY small! It was enough to cook breakfast and a basic dinner in, and sleep in. Cost wasn't more than 1.5 times a car rental from memory, so it meant it got us to/from Sydney and was our accomodation. The hire firms get a little bit concerned when you say you're taking it to Bathurst, but calm down when you explain where you'll be staying. No idea if prices have rocketed since.

That looks like a good idea as it will only be me in it (SWMBO is going on a girlies week away whilst i'm in Aus). Unless any Aussie marshals planning on marshalling the 2016 bathurst 1000 have space for a Pommie marshal in a hotel room / B&B / caravan / tent?

I'll get in touch with the SAMROA/Adelaide crowd, see if they can help. Can you PM me your email address?

You are doing the 12 hours in February ?

Try airbnb; we found a house for the weekend there. Probably rooms available as well

How many nights do you need ?

I'm hoping to marshal the V8 Supercar Bathurst 1000 in October 2016. Will have a look at airbnb. Thanks. Looking at staying near the circuit from the Wednesday lunchtime before the meeting till the Monday morning afterwards (5 nights)

why not try CouchSurfing and stay for free?

treat your hosts to a nice Pub dinner and they'll be as happy as you are... that's what I did at Bathurst last time.
