Say it isn't so
It has been mentioned in other threads of races being staged. What races or events do you think have been staged or even worse fixed?

Fixed races let me see. Now there was the Porsche Cup race at one of the Indy races at Surfers and also the Bob Jane NASCARs were given orders to entertain not race, the 2 litres of course and maybe some others as well.
Oh yeah and there was a HQ race at Amaroo where the 2 quick cars did organize before the race to do a lot of passing and rubbing to keep the crowd on their feet, but we were going to come first and second anyway so why not! |

There was this James Hardie 12hr in 1992 when this Vn V6 Commodore finiished 2nd in class behind a BMW of Longhurst, Crighton and Jones.
Now that was staged because of the driving talent in the car it should not have got by the first 3 hours. Though what I've heard the crew on that car were brillant and kept it going so they staged that. I think the next year they had an issue with SABOTAGE........... |

Speaking of sabotage one year at the Gold Coast the top 10 HQ’s had their fuel pipes crushed by pliers in their paddock area overnight. I bet the driver of the 11th fastest didn’t have pliers in his toolbox the next morning.

At Amaroo they had a F5000 field turn out, and the deal was that first over the hill would win, but between the first lap and the last they were to let anyone by who put their car alongside... was great spectacle, fast too, and nobody got hurt.

The best thing about Amaroo is that if everybody changed places thru the loop the crowd couldn't see! And they all thought we were being very brave!

As far as the F5000 races at Amaroo go... it was still extremely spectacular, there was less danger for the drivers because nobody defended their position, the passing was real anyway... what more could you want?
They just shuffled positions on the last lap to give the winner his position over the line. |

LOl - you're a ******* Ray - the days of F5000's at Amaroo, Oran Park, Warwick Farm...
My training as a Gopher was completed in those days - Max Stewart, Davison, Walker, Leffler - brings back some memories though. The days of real racing - not the whimpish stuf they have now |

Warwick Farm - yes! Oran Park - no!... give me Phillip Island any day, the cars booming up to Lukey Heights, tippy toeing over the crest, a quick V8 blast when they settled, then hard on the brakes for MG...
Or the noise of the eruption of the grid, the seagulls lifting into the air as they feel the vibes, the cars still half a mile away, but an urgency among them to get off the track at the Southern Loop. Those days were the greatest. What am I, by the way? |

Why did I put Oran Park? Warwick Farm, Surfers, Sandown - power circuits - long(ish) straights which really suited the 5litre engines - but Oran, Amaroo, to me at least, really tested the car and driver more than just the engine. COuld it handle, could the diver handle the car?
But there again, sub-60 second lap times were not, IMHO, real racing |

Sub-50s at Amaroo, sub-40s at Oran Park... you're right, hardly racing!
Surfers was just over the minute, same as Sandown, another place where they looked good... going there on Sunday to watch them? And what am I? |

I had forgotten about the 5000's being at Sandown this weekend (just had someone ring needing a transmitter for the ex-Garth Wigstdon 1978 4 Door Group C car they are racing this weekend - first time back on the track I believe!)
I will be out there Friday delivering timing transmitters but not sure if I will be able to get out again over the weekend. Might make an effort though seeing as tickets turned up in todays mail |

How many of the Group C cars are running? |

Unfortunately don't know - like most events these days very little advance informaiton - although, havcing said that, event secretary, David Floyd has been quite helpful for me.
And ringing Davo won't help - this is a track hire - he has nothing other than pure money to do with the event |
