Franklin should be qualifying in the top 10 on the grid
By the time he'd made his ninth timed run with his first J-79 powered Green Monster, Art Arfons had set his THIRD World Land Speed Record. On only his fifth timed run with the Green Monster, Art Arfons clocked 571 mph.

"World Land Speed Record" does not mean "a land speed record" or "the international record for (fill in the blank) class." When you hold the World Land Speed Record, it means you have the fastest record PERIOD.

Please read your post again, Franklin. In your haste to hammer something back at the first person who questions you, you fail to see that what you said is ambiguous.

We are looking for clarification - not confrontation.

According to my sources, the records attributed to Art Arfons are:

434.22mph October 5 1964
536.712mph October 27 1964
576.553mph November 7 1965

All, I understand, accepted and accredited by the FIA. But your post fails to inform the casual reader as to the mark attained on the 9th run, and you do not say whether 571mph was an accredited record run.

From my sources, at least, it appears not. But if you had explained it fully - or expanded on it when Peter asked you to, I wouldn't have had to go trawling for the information myself.

As I am an avowed circuit racing nut, you can appreciate that the source material was not the first thing to leap off my shelves.

And it's all a bit academic really, when all I have to do is mention the words "Andy Green".

A land speed record is the average of two timed runs in opposite directions.

In other words, by the time Arfons set in 1965 his record of 576 mph the Green Monster at that point only had a lifetime total of NINE timed runs.

Think about that one. A self-taught engineer with a car built on a budget of only $10,000 almost every time he rolled his car off the trailer was going faster than anyone had ever gone before.
