Race control to race car radio communications.
The main organising club asked if we were interested in a a portable radio system with earpieces for each driver to enable race control to keep in touch with us, i.e. to warn of oil or crashes, let us know if safety car was out on the circuit or race red flagged etc. I would also imagine this could be used to encourage stragglers to close up on the safety car or advise they will loose their position or gee guys up to line up for their races, warn offenders that they had been black flagged and to get off the damned circuit so we didnt have a fiasco like we did this year with an Escort dropping oil all over the track but refusing to get off, a nice little "If you dont come in this lap it will cost you 200 quid" in his shell like may have done the trick!
I thought it sounded a good idea but the downside (there is always one isnt there?) would be the drivers would have to pay for and get to keep the equipment at a cost of £150 which presumably also goes towards the cost of the base station etc. I feel it would help safety and a smoothly ran race if race control were in touch with us (we wouldnt be able to talk back) but the general concensus was it was too expensive and didnt seem much interest, any thoughts on this? |

I can't understand how you are for this Al considering the cost and how you are against any more expense to go racing.
It sounds a good idea but perhaps a cheaper way would be for the drivers who dawdle when the SC is out or need a good talking to be shown a black flag. |

Cost is £150.00 for each receiver, and £2,000.00 for the base / repeater station and Clerk's radio.
It works well with the Legends because a) it's mandatory, and b) they hold the licence for the product in the UK (and therefore the supply and profit) Not necessary if drivers look-out for flag signals and understand what the procedures are for a Safety Car deployment |

EH? Quick search on google gives me:
http://www.rh2way.com/catalog.php?item=292 Which looks like the legend kit, but statesid sourcing. Bulk discount on the drivers receivers (and they give you the control radio free. Job done surely, even including shipping tax? I quite like the idea of this in principle, but surely I'd be cheaper if the safety car was allowed to use this (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/PIT_maneuver) for car's that refused to stop for a black flag instead? plus it'd add some entertainment for the spectators |

I have seen several major cockups when using the safety car I think this kit would be invaluable in this situation.

Could have potentially prevented the incident on cooper straight in CTCRC at brands hatch this year (CoC could have told driver to get off the track near post 7, as the marshals were frantically encouraging him to!!) |

Very very true westfield never thought of that. Anyhow you get to keep the kit and I am sure it would have a good resale value, look up transponders on ebay and see what I mean. Yes the more I think about the more i would be prepared to pay the money, now just got to convince 150 odd others! :-)

The problem is that it wont end up anywhere near £150, it will be locked into one system that will be no doubt double that and run by one company and then after a couple of years we'll be told it's the wrong system and we all need to buy a new one.

How about doing it as a buy-or-hire thing? £10 a race on entry for hire or buy your own? Would that float...

I think that had been suggested in the past.

But they are not are they thats the trouble. You know what its like nut down concerntrating it is possible to miss things, I never saw a black flag once and got a £100 fine and that was 12 years ago, this little gizzmo would have saved me that.

I will admit that the driver warning flags can be difficult to see especially with the **** poor size of the numbers they hold up plus the fact that a lot of the start finish line posts are in a position where you are looking for the first corner, Brands especially.

The prices i stated earlier were straight from the horses mouth so to speak.
And yes you can always find stuff cheaper in the states even with the exchange rate as it is. But try getting one of the Raceceiver Dealers to send you the kit. The product is sold through affiliated dealers / licence holders and they don't step on each others toes. as for it's effectiveness? Not convinced. Have seen it used in Race Control for the Legends and all it takes is one person not to take notice of the instructions and you have the accident that you were trying to avoid As said earlier take better notice of the flags and flag points, understand what the safety car regs actually say, listen and take in any briefings you attend - minimise the problems! |

Rather down the front of the trousers (different market, that!) I reckon they should have it shoe'd into the helmet. Get more attention that way

Thing to remember is what other clubs would be prepared to fork out 2k for the base system? That 2k would get passed on in entry fee's adding to the 150 already spent by drivers. As has been said, many many times before,it IS down to the driver to read the final's,quite simple really! I think it comes down to the little bit on the bottom,as in "Read and Understood". |

Yes but as we have seen time and time and time again they don't even if they do in the heat of the moment things can get ignored, there was no extra charge on entries mentioned that was presumably covered by the £150 for the units, if you see the deal from the states they get the base unit free if they buy enough of the drivers units. Another incident I saw at our Lydden Festival that resulted in two cars getting badly damaged when Les Nash's engine exploded and covered the track in oil, a quick warning for all drivers to excercise caution would have saved the two cars going off and ramming each other or at least it would have saved the 2nd one going in as thats what did the damage. Yes oil flags could have been deployed but invariably you are on the hazard before you see them this would have been an advance warning to all to slow down approaching the hairpin.
Terry maybe the system may allow the SC driver to have a two way link to talk back to the following pack with instructions. Last edited by Al Weyman; 3 Dec 2009 at 10:51. |
