Not Grp C/Grp A, but the same era.

Inspired by last nights late night legends episode, on the 79 Repco Trial, Where are the HDT Team Commodores now? There were 3 'actual' race cars -
1.Brockie's Car #05 (AFAIK, now owned by Peter Champion, and of late in the HPDC Museum at Norwell
2. Car #17
3. The third placed car (Ive forgotten the number)

as well as (according to the documentary on the trial) another 'test/trial' car the team ran for service.

I Think i know where the winning (05) car is, but what happened to the other 2 race cars, as well as the trial/test car?

One of them was running in the ARC for a few years afterwards, maybe as late as the late '80s. Can't remember who drove it but I keep associating Geoff Portman with it, so it might have been him.

Wasn't it #05 that was in the Birdwood museum?

One of the cars kept rallying for a period. Brock drove one of them in the 1980 Castrol International. One of them was also fitted with a V8 and driven by Wayne Bell in the early 80s.

As mentioned by William, Geoff Portman rallied one of the cars (still in the Marlboro colours, but minus the decals) in the late 80s (1989 from memory) in an ARC round of two.

The #05 Round Australia VB car isn't owned by Champion but ownership has been retained by GMHA. It has only rarely been allowed out anywhere. It's recent appearance at Speed on Tweed was it's first appearance anywhere since the original rally with the engine running. It's been a static exhibit at some places, but that was a first for having the car under its own power.

Did Brock not drive the car in a story for Wheels (or was it Motor?) a year or two ago, it was said then that that was the first time it had run since August 1979.

Re Geoff Portman, didn't he drive a Cortina for the Ford team in the 79 race. My memory is fading.

I believe the winning car from the repco was still owned by Holden and kept in the original condition as it came off the rally, dirt and all. I thought AMC did an article on it a while ago.

Some of the older cars are popping their heads up in Europe Here

There must be garages full of them somewhere

In November 2003 I was playing tourist in southern Queensland when I happened upon a driver training facility between Brisbane and Surfers. (Can't for the life of me remember the name of it.) There was a museum there, and amongst just about every model holden ever made were the '78 05 A9X, the '72 28 LJ replica, the remains of Big Kevs supercar,(see Oran Park July 2000), AND the 05 '79 Repco Commodore. Looking at the photo, it has had a wash, but definitely not been restored. Behind the museum was a workshop with Paul Morris's Supercar and a GT3 driven by "Crocker". Can anybody remind me where I was???

I believe that would be the Holden Performance Driving Centre.

I just had a look at their website but it gives no clues as to who owns it. It's not Champion's is it?

TSR has a lot of promise if they can keep it on the circuit!
I think that the MORRIS family own the driving centre ( but I could be wrong ), I think that they brought it off either Frank Gardner or BMW when Paul went from Super Touring to the supertaxi's.

Later in 1979 Portman drove an ex-Repco works Cortina (in orange 'Autosport' livery) in a rally, from memory the Southern Cross.

Been watching the highlights of the '93 season & am wondering - what happened to the 2 Caltex Toyota Corollas? (Bond & Smith Driving, finished runner up to Doulman in the ex- JPS/ex-Mobil M3 converted to 2 litre...)

Or for that matter, any other car from that season? 2 B&H Evo M3's, 2 Diet Coke Evo M3's (I know one of the B&H cars ended up with Cam McLean who won the Aust Sports Sedan championship with it... )

Testing the memory now!

One of the Corollas went to a Victorian team (Inspired Racing). Melinda Price drove it on a few occasions. Don't know what happened to it after that.

The other one was used to provide some parts for the Hyundai Lantra 2 litre car Bond built for Steve Hardman.

I think there were 5 M3s that year..the 2 B&H cars, the 2 Diet Coke cars and a 5th in BMW Driver Training Centre colours. I recall that 5th car was sold to an expat Aussie in Indonesis ( Robert Paul?). McLean used one of the B&H cars, one went to John Blanchard to run in 1994 in the 1994 2 litre championship, a Diet Coke car went to Mark Adderton to do likewise and I think BMW kept one themselves. Steve Voight may have ended one up with one of these 2 litre cars.....

Where are they all now??

I think there were actually 3 B&H cars, one of which was the original car #20 which Denny Hulme died in, now back in NZ. I think there were 2 more, one of which McLean used to win the National Sports Sedan Championship, this car is still in this trim and is owned by a mate of mine and is only used a couple of times a year for BMW Club track days. One of the Diet Coke cars is in NZ. Thats about all I can tell you

After the 1990 Wellington 500, 2 Schnitzer M3s were shipped to the B&H team. These were the cars used in the 91 and 92 seasons. At some point a Bigazzi car was purchased and raced by Paul Morris in a white BMW livery. For Bathurst 92 a brand new M3 was built, this was I think the last Group A M3 built anywhere in the world.

I believe in 94 the B&H cars were the 92 built car and one of the the Schnitzer M3s, the other Schnitzer and Bigazzi car being the 2 Diet Coke cars.

The 92 built car was sold to Cameron McLean and raced as a sports sedan in the mid 90's in B&H colours as # 25 with Greenfield Mowers sponsorship, Blanchard ran his 93 car in the 94 Super Touring Championship as # 20.
