US National Star Mazda Championship

Having just been pipped for a drive in the 2007 Indy Pro series, Jamie Morrow has secured a seat with Velocity Motorsports, a front running Star Mazda team, where his team mate will be Aussie driver James Davison.

Morrow flys to the US tomorrow for 2 days of testing, before making his Star Mazda debut at the season opener on Friday, 16th March at Sebring in Florida.

I'm pleased to say that a corporate sponsor has funded the entire season, so its for all 12 races. Full details will be announced later this week.

Thats very good news for Jamie.

Venezuealan Riccardo Vasmer, who has raced in US F200 for the last 2 seasons & tested a F Renault with Fortec in 2005 will be one of the drivers Jamie will be competing against.

El_Gibletto,

Thanks.

The standard and depth of competition is high. None the less, Jamie is racing with a good team, so he's every chance of doing well. Fingers crossed!

Is the Star Mazda series considered a step up from FBMW and FF2000 in the states? I'm unclear on the 'racing ladder' in America.

Definitely a step up from FBMW and also I believe from FF2000. I think Star Mazda is a little like Fomula Renault is to Formula Ford and FBMW in the UK.

I watched a bit of the Star Mazda races last night on World Motorsport on Sky.

FF2000 is still going strong. It just changed companies that ran it and also the tyres they run on.

The national FF2000 series is toast after the dallara debacle but there is still a east and west championship.

Did the organisers ever say any more on that, other than a post by one of them on another forum that someone linked to on here?

30+ cars at the Sebring test. Looks like UKFF runner Jonny Baker has crossed the Atlantic too.

This debate is similar to the FFord / FRenault / FBMW one in the UK, in reality they do not feed each other as they do not here. If you look at the Atlantic drivers this year by my rough count 8 came straight from BMW and 4 from Mazda, the BMW drivers did not go through Mazda. I would suggest the ladder goes. FBMW or FMazda or possibly FF2000 then Atlantics or Indy Pro then Champ Car or IRL.

have a look at the news items on the Champcar Atlantic site and the Walker racing site concerning davison and there might be a clue to that one.

Are you referring to the issues of payment? If so its still a wonder why Davison didn't look for another Atlantics drive and save himself from learning another car this year as well as taking a step back?

Jamie 15th from a 24th start. Not bad given he'd not raced for over 6 months + had never driven at Seebring and had only done ma handful of laps in a Star Mazda car. More to come!

A link to the Star Mazda site here in case anyone's looking for more info on this series including live timing and all that and, a schedule of tape-delayed race broadcasts on SPEEDTV here, again if you're interested. Have to wait for March 24th to watch this one but the race was only like half distance or so because of rain.

By the way, I've never heard it called "US National" Star Mazda before. Is that monicker for the purpose of identifying the thread on tenths or, where'd that come from? It's just Star Mazda or Formula Mazda (maybe)....
