January Social Evening

South Midland's Region January social evening will be on Tuesday 29th in The White Horse in Silverstone village. The guest speaker will be regular Historic driver Simon Diffey. Simon has driven all types of historic cars from Fiat Abarth Saloons to F1 cars and also competes in VSCC trials and driving tests.

Once again the evening will start at 8pm and all marshals are welcome to attend.

I may well try and make the journey for this one, weather permitting. If you don't know Simon, he's very entertaining and an all round 'good bloke' Highly recommended.

January Club Night

A most interesting and entertaining evening, not quite what I expected.
Pity about the poor turn-out though!

Strange how 70 to 80 people turn up to see someone who they think is a big "name" but some of the best guest speakers are not so well supported. Simon Diffey was very good and most of the stories he told are totally unrepeatable and not for family consumption. For a person who said he had not done this sort of thing before he really should think of taking up after dinner speaking and maybe even writing a book.

I think an answer may be that when the "big names" are guesting ie Allan McNish it is on a Thursday before a big meeting when marshals from further afield are there anyway.
If I lived nearer I would attend more of these nights...just my thoughts Alan.

Yeah, I'm the same, it has to be someone I really want to see (hear), because of the 'rush' involved

Changed circumstances mean that it's no longer practical for us to get to these social evenings, but this would have been one we'd definitely have wanted to come to.

How many people would go if I was the guest speaker? Even I wouldn't bother to turn up for that one!

I think you are going to get our younger flag marshals confused. They probably didn't know that in the old days we used to wave different coloured underpants in the air before flags were invented. I thought if I did a talk on them I could bring some of them along!

So "skid marks" had a whole different meaning?

Dave, I think you are missing something here. June and I go to every one when we are here to go and we have had some super nights from people we have never heard of before!! We were not able to do the last one but it sounds as if Simon Diffey came up trumps, which is often the case.

My suggestion to everyone is to come along if you can; you may be pleasantly surprised.

I completely agree, weeknights are a problem though, as I don't have a defined 'finishing time' @ work. if it's someone I really want to see I have to take leave.
