Best drive of 2002
OK, the season's over and discussed. But one last thing before we put 2002 to rest. Which drive of 2002 do you think was the best of the year and why?

Could'nt think of just one.
JV at Austria, Monty from the back at Sepang, Webber in Melbourne, Rubins at Silverstone & Sato in Japan. These were all pretty impressive. |

I'd add Coulthard in Monaco (for holding Schumacher the entire race), Kimi in France(inexperience killed this brave drive), Schumacher in Brazil(with the brand new car that proved unbeatable later in the season) and in Malaysia(U know why)

Agreed dragon x. Monaco was great for DC (I'll add Webber to that race as well) and despite being a fan of Michaels, I really had my fingers crossed for Kimi in France.

Well i'd like to see the other drivers down the grid get credit for their superb drivers all year, the likes of Fishichella, Frentzen, Webber and Irvine for who did great jobs in "bad" cars.
They for me provided the real (only) excitment of the year. I would find it easier to remember who finished 6th, 7th or 8th than who won this year (well almost) |

I would have said Webber in Monaco. He would have finished ahead of a lot of esteemed rivals if not for a wheel problem. I still haven't seen the pass he made on Panis exiting the tunnel.

Doesn't it seem sad that drivers like Fisichella, Coultard, Barrichello, and Ralf all have secure seats in F1, despite having had race winning cars for many more seasons than Jacques, yet failing to chalk up as many wins as he (let alone a WDC) that it is Jacques who doesn't have a drive in F1??? Sad indeed. |

Michael's third placing in Sepang after having to pit because of the first corner incident. And i was there to witness all of his overtaking moves!

Webber in Melbourne for mine the way he drove in his debut & with the weight of the country on his back was unbelievable.

Future Ferrari driver (please let me continue to dream) Giancarlo Fisichella in Austria (Sorry TeddyG, but JV's drive did not compare), Canada, or Monaco - take your pick. Outstanding drives to get that tank into 5th three times.

Webber in Melbourne - to keep the car going, despite the melee at the first corner and the fact his differential packed up not long into the race, and he managed to hold off Salo and force him into the error.
Of course, this is a completely biased opinion. |

Monaco Grand Prix, David Coulthard 1st
Australian Grand Prix, Mark Webber 5th Hungarian Grand Prix, Giancarlo Fisichella 6th They were the only really outstanding drives from my point of view. |

I think Sato's drive in Japan was better than Webber's in Australia on account of Webber being helped by half the field falling off at the first corner. But it was still a great drive.

Montoya's pole lap at Monza was the greatest qualifying show. But DC at Monaco takes some beating as a pure race drive.
A lot of the ones people have mentioned haven't really been beyond the limits of the car and the circumstances. |

Monty in Canada.. That was shaping up for a good finish (as well as the Ralf/Kimi pass).

I'd go for Webber in Melbourne, because he scored points in his first race in a car that was far from the best. Sure, there were retirements that helped, but as F1manoz says, his differential packed up early on and if your car's not working properly you deserve a fair bit of credit for getting it through the race!

i also think webber's drive was the best.
Sure, Takuma drove well at the Japanese GP. And sure, Webber was helped by a first corner accident, BUT, take into account how much better the EJ12 is than the PS02!! plus, it was a debut race as apposed to Takuma's last of the year!! But sure, Takumas was good. I also think Kimi's at France was good, although he didnt win and was put in that good position (just) by Schumacher's crossing of the line, although it was his fault. Tom. |
