Word is that XXX Motor Sport from NZ (the blokes that run Baird & Reynolds in NZ) are planning on running a 2 car team in the Australian series this year!

Very sad to hear. No doubt the Sherrin family should be hanging their heads in shame

This doesn't have muchto do with the Sherrins. Current Cupcar had a category manager and series sponsors, but seems it was the teams that had trouble commiting. They should run in the off season of V8's, with some other lesser categories....

Rough deal to the current entrants and the new category manager however this is one of the better things to happen to Aus motorsport in a good while.

This should free up the use of 997 Porsche GT3 to the rest of GT/ Sportscar categories around Australia

Will be interesting to see where the 9 entrants will wind up in 2009, also those who bailed from last season.

Exciting to see 997s let out of the dungeon and be able to race in other categories. 6 years late and a lot of stupidity but the time has finally come.

There's holes in the v8 support, v8 tv revenue, AGP and Clipsal now.

Affirmative. Also there is state series and maybe the 996 GT3 series could change its name and eligibility but I guess that depends if Sven has one

Interesting comment that I do not disagree with---other than it has not ended-- not necessarily even that piece of stupidity.
The GT CMA now has an equally stupid clause preventing cars deemed "theirs" from any other national series. if you are consistent you will rationalise that piece of Cams and GT STUPIDITY.

It is premature to pre suppose that this will change anything yet. The is much taking place as to solutions, partial solutions ,alternatives so wait a little to see the wash up.

It would be most logical to move them into the series where their name already fits. Run as a class or in an open class with the RS & RSR's,GT2's etc. Be like the old Porsche Cup-- where everybody was made welcome.

That series name-- Porsche GT3 Cup Challenge.

Have to agree here, who writes this rubbish (rules)?

Time was when for example you could buy a touring car and race in their events, you could enter it in Sports Sedan events, hell with the right tyres you could even run them in street car events..

Wasn't a large part of the creation of this series was because the competitors owning these cars were being treated more or less like second class citizens by GT when they could race for wins amongst themselves instead of racing for tenth against Astons and Italian exotica?

Wouldn't then the addition of 997s put the 996 drivers straight back into the same position, especially in the current climate where upgrading to new car is highly economically impractical?

This has to be a rather "out there" statement. V8 Supercar support, tv revenue, AGP, and Clipsal will all continue without Carrera Cup.

Having gone to the AGP last year, the racing from the Carrera Cup was hardly exciting, and made more comical the series owners duelling it out at the back of the grid and then ribbing each other about it afterwards.

If Carrera Cup contributed to Clipsal like that, then it wasn't all that much.

What category will replace Carrera Cup? This could seriously add to the V8 event spectacle if it is well planned and managed.

More interestingly, what will become of the preparation outfits that existed to provide support to racers in this category.

Mr Richards, Mr Fitzgerald, Mr McElrea amongst others may now have equipment and staff they dont need, and dont have a budget to pay for....
