Just a thought
I seen some kids with a botched together kart, just a piece of **** but they had something ive never seen before... they used their sprocket as a brake rotor. It got me thinking that mabey that wasnt a bad idea if you had a strong enough sprocket.
Any comments? Nefarious |

front or rear sprocket? if its the rear no problem depending on the sprocket material,if its the front braking is affected by chain tension.

For most applications it wouldn't be worth it. All you will save is the weight of a standard rear sprocket (one used as a brake as well would need to be of similar material and weight as a standard brake disc) which you'd probably add back in with the longer, more complex brake pipe system. Add to that the complication when changing gearing and the risk of damage if a chain broke.....

Its a really old idea revisited. Tho origins of this idea escape me now but I have seen this arrangement before.
Trouble is what happens when you dribble chain lube on the sprocket and it makes its way onto the brakepads???? Secondly, I cannot see an alloy sprocket lasting too long under the rigours of hard braking. This would necessitate the use of at least some kind of steel plate for the sprocket available where???? And as noted above gearing changes and broken chains......I shudder to think! |
