Lola Mk 5/5A

Following on from the interesting dialogue on Lola T60, can the various experts clafify the position on the FJ Lola Mk 5 and 5A ? John Starkey's book indicates a total of 9 built but there seem to have been more racing in 1963 -

Mk5A
Midland Rcg Ptnp 3 Mk5A plus possibly a Mk5
Winkelmann/Rees
Berrow-Johnson
Offenstadt
Troberg

Mk5
D Fletcher
Len Selby
D Hitches
"Franz Muller"
Bernusset
Scuderia Italia/A de Adamich
At least one other in Italy (Dari/Zanarotti)
H Dibley
possibly also Vroomen although I suspect this was an earlier model

Could someone list them by chassis number?

The total of nine excludes the 5a models.
Nine Mk5s were built in 1962, numbered BRJ43 to BRJ53. I don’t have a complete list but offer the following:
BRJ43 - Equipe Lola (Hine, Prior) 1962, MRP (Hine, Fenning) from August 1962, MRP spare 1963
BRJ49 - David Hitches 1962-63 (initially I believe under the Equipe Lola banner)
BRJ52 - Picko Troberg 1963

A further nine 5a models were built 1963 and numbered BRJ54-62, including:
BRJ-55 - Eric Offenstadt
BRJ-56 - Picko Troberg
BRJ-57 - MRP
BRJ-59 - MRP
BRJ61 -Roman Dirschl

Lola Mk5/5a

Hi David I am new to 10/tenths Forum but noted with interest very short string re Lola Mk5/5a F.J. cars.

Is there anyone who has details of original owners/drivers with respective chassis nos?

What of Denis Taylor Mk5 crashed at Monaco in 1962 unfortunately killing Dennis?

Also Hugh Dibley's car "Scuderia Light Blue"?

I didn't think MRP raced Lolas until 1963 - Didn't Ron Harris run Lola pseudo works cars August 1962 to start of 1963 season.

Anyone shed any light on these fabulous Juniors.

The main differences between Mk5 & Mk5a Lolas are in the chassis design and the rear suspension design plus the engine cover and the rear wheel type.

The 5a chassis is much stiffer and more triangulated particularly in the cockpit area. I believe Tony Souhgate may have had some input in the design/detailing of the 5a.
The 5a rear suspension is more conventional (the Mk5 had an upside down rear upright i.e. single bottom link and wishbone upper link as opposed to normal lower wishbone and single upper link).

The 5a rear wheels also had 6 bolt T60 style wheels in lieu of 4 bolt 8 spoke pattern.

The 5a engine cover was more streamlined with an improved appearance.

Ted,

The 1st chassis # for Mk5a's was BRJ54 and there were 10 made in all as original MK5a cars. Some were modified to T53, T54 and T55 cars and these were renumbered with Slough chassis plates. I have seen the car you are referring to as being in Australia mid 90's to 2000 which I believe was ex MRP T55.

Regards

I can't easily account for 10 5As. Using the F1R Fact Book, it seems that 8 were delivered by the end of April 1963
MRP x 3
Winkelmann/A Rees
Offenstadt
Troberg
Berrow-Johnson
Dibley

I have not "spotted" any additional cars apearing later in the year so I presume that # 9 + 10 were replacements ?

Ted/RAP

The T55/Mk5a in Australia (mid 90's - 2000) arrived with SCA, 6 speed Hewland, 30 degree adaptor and outboard front suspension. From all indications it appeared to be a rebuilt Mk5a with pushrod rocker pivot bushes and inner mounting points still intact on the frame. It raced with F.J. engine and 5 speed only for a short period of time in Australia then was sold to U.S.

According to "Lola History" in Autosport Dec 6 1968 all T53, T54 and T55's were at some stage Mk5a's.

As for the number of Mk5a's two references list 10 Mk5a's. These are "Lola History" Autosport Dec 6 1968 and the book "British Racing Green" p 238.

I dont have a definitive list for all cars. There seems to be more around now than there were in 1963.

I can tell you that only 9 Mk5's were made by Lola.

I have a note in my files which indicates Roman Dirschl as having Mk5a # BRJ61. Can't confirm however.

Cheers

So if 9 cars were built starting with BRJ55 the last car is BRJ63 ?? Making the 4 MRP cars 57,59,60,63. 57,59,60,ran as T54s and 63 ran as a T55 with outboard suspension thats still in a box with it.

-10 off 1963 Lola Mk5a's, chassis nos BRJ54 to BRJ63 inclusive.

Cheers,

Andrew,

Welcome to ten tenths forum!

Do these questions raised by these documents indicate more cars than ever officially recognised as being made by Lola or was it simply creating more plates for customs purposes? Have sent you mail.

mk5a's onwards

Haydn,
MRP had 5 Mk5a derived cars out Brands in '64, yet Lola only recorded 3 MRP Mk5a cars and an extra chassis.

Andrew.

I owned and raced a Mk 5 in the USA a few years ago. I bought it from David and Lorena McGloughlin and it was reputed to be the ex Willment car fitted with a twin cam Lotus Ford motor which ran at Brands Hatch in a non championship F1 Race in 1965 driven by Hawkins or Frank Gardner. It also supposedly ran at Enna. I can't remember the chassis number but I sold it to Douglas Jamison of Coys who raced it a few times and then sold it on to ?. Nice little car it still had a twin cam in it when I had it. I don't
remember too many details but the water bearing chassis tubes got really warm on the elbows I recall.
