considering all the bad luck he has had this season i think its fitting that he won the title in the way he did- by having a botched pitstop!

i think richard has only had 1 or 2 problem free races this season and he still won the title!

He's won the title with the lowest number of points since Hoshino in 1993 - and that was in the days of dropped scores!

Congratulation Richard, one of the best drivers we have run at Team JLR. He was a star in Vauxhall Junior with us and hopefully he can get a really top line drive from here on.

Congratulations Richard - he's always impressed me, and although as sceptic says it was by no means dominant, to win the title with Dandelion meant he was up against it IMHO.

i think it would have been dominant had he better reliability, wasnt crashed out of race leads and didnt get disqualified in malaysia.

My comments weren't intended to be negative, and I suppose the way he won was partly revenge for what happened to another Ulster driver, Eddie Irvine, all those years ago.

Formula Nippon has been very competitive this year - seven different winners in 11 races (of which nine were points scoring).

And as you say, to win with Dandelion is even more impressive. I think I'm correct in saying this is their first title. Jon knows more than me about pre-2000 Nippon, so I'm sure he'll correct me if not.

TOP STUFF from Richard . At one point after FPA it all looked like it wasnt going to happen in single seaters for him ...but one good break and he showed everyone again what he can do .

didnt irvine lose the title in the same sorta way prost lost the 88 f1 title? or something liek that?

Irvine finished the season on 33 points, with Kazuyoshi Hoshino on 32.
But each was required to drop their worst score. Hoshino's worst finish was outside the points, so he stayed on 32. Irvine's worst was sixth, so he dropped to 32 as well.

...but Hoshino was given the title because he had won more races.

I fear, however, that Formula Nippon is not the Grand Prix nursery that it once was. The way things are looking at the moment, Lyons has his work cut out just to get a GP test.

Great news! Well done to Richard, hes had so much bad luck this year and would surley have wrapped up the championship before now without it. Still, the best driver won in the end.

No , i think Richard Tarling won it that year ...

Lyons was right on it though ...If i remember , and i may be wrong , Lyons got pushed off the track at Oulton ...well unfair ..and it cost him dear..

Really hope to see him in GP's in the future.

Unfortunately Richard probably won't make it to a good F1 drive unless Frank Williams decides to support him as a British driver as he did for DC and DH and JB. He's from northern Ireland which doesn't seem to have wads of cash floating about, and his management (which he shares with Damien Faulkener and Ralph Firman) don't apear to be particularly well connected in the paddock.

I do hope it leads somewhere for him; after all, Formula Nippon Champion and All-Japan GT Champion in one year is a good proof of both speed and versatility. But is it worth Lyons looking at GP2 or Superfund, or should he be setting his sights higher?
