Lister Opt for Chevy engine
Lister have announced their LMP 900, which will break covers in spring, will be powered by the same power plant that drove the Corvette to a win at the daytona 24 hours last year. lawrence pearce said " the engine is 50kg lighter and more compact than the jaguar V12" The Chevy engine already produces 600bhp at mild form so at top form, expect the listers to fly. One benefit will be almost assured reliability, something which lister often lack with the storm.

Yes thats true but the standard LS1 V8 starts life as a 5.7 litre so it can be modified to 6.0 litre
The more V8s the better as far as im concerned PM Last edited by powermite; 18 Jan 2002 at 10:40. |

So another LMP using brute force and displacement for power. It should rival the roar of the Panoz. The Chevy engine has already proven to be fairly reliable as long as the Lister can keep it from overheating they should fine. Will it be enough to catch the fast and effecient Audis, thats a tough call.

Still, it's a shame they dropped the Jag V12 in favour of another one of these boring V8 kiddie toy engines...

If you've ever driven anything with a V8 making over 500 horsepower, its far from kiddie. I think they chose the Chevy because it offers the biggest bang for the buck.

All joking aside, I would have liked to see them go for the Jag but I am sure they know what they are doing. Besides, if this doesn't work out I wouldn't want to be GM - Laurence Pearce is everyone's nightmare "disgruntled customer" |

I think the Chevy V8 has been "slightly" more successful than any Jag engine especially V12.
The only reason Lister have won any races is because they chose to go in the British GT,where there is very little in the way of opposition and where the races last no longer than an hour or two PM |

It would look really bad if they beat the Caddy.

Powermite - "I think the Chevy V8 has been "slightly" more successful than any Jag engine especially V12."
Surely you don't refer to 24 hour races when speaking of Chevy V-8s vs. Jag V-12s? Nor, for that matter, sprint races (IMSA)... Tullius XJR-5s and 7s couldn't beat the 962s regularly (what could???!!!); but March/Chevvies and such...yes. When TWR (Tom Walkinshaw Racing) ran V-12 Jags at le Mans and Daytona 24s, there were no Chevvies in sight at the finish, yet the Jags were... LeMans: '87 (5th), 88(1st, 4th), 89(4th,8th), 90(1st,2nd), 91(2nd,3rd,4th) Daytona: '88(1st,3rd), 89(2nd), 90(1st, 2nd) And earlier, Tullius kicked butt in GTO with a V-12 XJS. of course if you're talking just shear numbers, I can't disagree...but then, what classes and how many Jags vs. how many Chevvies ran in those classes? There has never been a proliferation of jag powered racers as there has been Chevvies. All great fun tho', no??? |

I think it is a shame that the Jag engine wasn't used, although I can understand why.
This was/is a truly great engine. Fantastically successful and one of the best sounding engines that has ever graced Le Mans. Of course nowadays it is a bit too heavy, but to be fair it's original design is decades old. I always thought that it's replacement should be a certain 4 litre V8 maybe with a nice supercharger! Now let me see which manufacturer has one of those... |

Lister always know what they are doing. I think their LMP900 car will go well, when it hits the track.

Jaguar. Then Lister could keep it's Jaguar link. Although it's not as if Jaguar care about this (even though Lister are competing in Jaguar's natural arena). It's quite interesting that Lister have gone to using a Chevy engine - something it's Knobbly (and others) did back in the late 50s and early 60s. |

Lister also won the Suzuka 1000KM gt race with the storm, in 2000 I believe. They hammered the opposition of Japan GT cars like Supra, NSX, Skyline, McLaren and Diablo, and also the Viper team, (from Chamberlain I think,) and at least one 911 GT2. A photo I have also shows what looks like a Ferrari 550. Seems like competition doesn't come any stronger, - (except if you added a Saleen I guess.)
Powermite is right, the series in the UK was a bit thin sometimes, but this result showed the best of the Lister I think. There was a site with more info on this race but I've lost it. |
