2003 Race key points
After being lapped at Hungary, Michael Schumacher shows what a difference a race makes, by winning from JPM and extending his WDC lead to 3 points – still very close!

Ralf Schumacher misses the race after a heavy crash in testing – Marc Gene replaces him

Wilson’s Jaguar is left on the grid; both Verstappen and Alonso damage their cars in avoidance, Fernando riding over JW’s rear wheel in the process – both pit for repairs.

Trulli coasts to a halt with Hydraulic failure, after a feisty few opening corners!

Baumgartner drives the 2nd Jordan in place of Rallph Firman

Gene scores points for Williams on his debut as stand in driver.

A sad day at Monza as a fire marshall is killed by a flying wheel.




1998
Schumacher and Irvine score the first Ferrari 1-2 at Monza for 10 years.


1995
An unusual podium – Herbert won for Benetton with Frentzen 3rd on the Sauber.




1994
JJ Lehto stood in for Schumacher who was serving a two race ban for ignoring black flags at Silverstone. Benetton themselves agreed to make management changes after being found culpable for Verstappen’s recent pitstop fire, by tampering with the re-fuelling equipment. Herbert lined up a sensational 4th on the grid in the Loyus with a new Mugen V10 engine, sadly it was too little to late as Lotus were only days away from going into receivership. Hill won for Williams, whilst Hakkinen managed to get a Peugeot engined McLaren to last long enough for 3rd in the race.




1992
FISA decided that Adrea Moda’s woeful performance brought the sport into ‘disrepute’ and duly turfed them out of the paddock when they arrived. Brabham didn’t appear having run out of money. Both Ferrari’s (Alesi and Capelli) retired from the race. Senna won the race from Brundle and Schumacher in their Benetton’s.



1991
Benetton decided to fire Moreno in order to make room for a new sensation – Michael Schumacher, who went onto finish 5th.



1987
Honda announced it would be leaving Williams to focus its effort on McLaren. Meanwhile Williams ran it’s new ‘active’ car for Piquet, with Mansell in the standard car.




1985
Stefan Bellof was killed in a sportscar race just prior to the Italian Grand Prix; Tyrrell (in shock) decided not to replace him immediately so entered a single car for Martin Brundle. In the same sportscar race, Jonathan Palmer crashed his Porsche 956 and broke a leg – his team Zakspeed, decided to skip the Monza race.

The Hass Lola team appeared, with Alan Jones behind the wheel. De Cesaris split from Ligier. Prost won the race from Piquet.




1984
The FIA confirmed Tyrrell’s race ban (over tech irregularities relating to weight of the cars during the race IIRC) and declared that they would take no further part in the season. Toleman suspended Senna (over him signing for Lotus for 1985 despite being under contract to Toleman) and replaced him with Stefan Johansson (from Tyrrell), joined by Martini as team mate.

Excellent Monza! Despite the chicanes it still excites me.

I always think about those autumnal shots looking up the start finish straight, the rear of an F1 car disappearing into the distance, the old scoring board...
