Looking ahead to the race.

Momentum is good word to sum up F1 at the moment; Alonso has the season’s momentum with 3 wins and 2 podiums in 5 races. Kimi has the current impetus behind him after a dominant win in Spain last time out and Ferrari would dearly like some momentum after a torrid start to the season.

Whilst the Michelin teams carry all before them this year, Ferrari’s challenge is seemingly blunted by its tyres. Following the double puncture/failure on Schumacher’s car in Spain, Bridgestone decide that a puncture caused the left front tyre to deflate, whereas the rear suffered a structural 'weakness' of the actual carcass, which sounds like corporate speak for a tyre failure to me.

Both Michelin and Bridgestone will be recommending soft tyres for Monaco, the surface is not particularly hard on tyres and there is only really one high speed section of note, although the many slow corners require heavy braking and accelerating which will put some pressure onto rear tyres.

Max Mosley used to liken F1 to chess, claiming the viewer should be enthralled in the strategic challenge. Monaco is the one race where that statement holds true, the teams have to navigate their way around an incredibly tight track where track position is all - so who will we see running very light in 2nd Q to get track position for the race I wonder – then we have the challenge of pitting your cars without re-joining behind slower cars. All in all there is plenty for the teams to think about as Monaco presents its own unique challenge.

The circuit is all about downforce, so we should see teams wheeling out some aero modifications. Williams have been working on a raft of improvements including aero and looking at race starts, which is an area that the team has suffered in.

Of the others McLaren and Renault look like being the main challengers for the win, but despite some cautious pre race comments, it’s not beyond the bounds that Jarno Trulli could score Toyota’s first win here. Of course, you can never rule out Ferrari; Ayrton Senna’s score of 6 Monaco wins is one of the few records that Michael Schumacher has still to claim, can he make it 6 wins this weekend?
