2014 IndyCar Series championship standings

2014 IndyCar Series standings after Houston:

1. Will Power (Penske Chevy), 405
2. Hélio Castroneves (Penske Chevy), 366
3. Ryan Hunter-Reay (Andretti Honda), 364
4. Simon Pagenaud (Schmidt Honda), 346
5. Juan Pablo Montoya (Penske Chevy), 289
6. Marco Andretti (Andretti Honda), 281
7. Carlos Muñoz (Andretti Honda), 270
8. Sébastien Bourdais (KV Chevy), 242
9. Scott Dixon (Ganassi Chevy), 237
10. James Hinchcliffe (Andretti Honda), 230
11. Tony Kanaan (Ganassi Chevy), 226
12. Justin Wilson (Dale Coyne Honda), 221
13. Ryan Briscoe (Ganassi Chevy), 221
14. Jack Hawksworth (Herta Honda), 219
15. Charlie Kimball (Ganassi Chevy), 213

There's 8 races left, with 6 single-points and 2 double-points. That's some 500 points at stake. Dominating champions have had 38-point averages, so that's 380 points.

I would tend to think that the top 4 are the candidates for the title -Power, Castroneves, Hunter-Reay and Pagenaud-, but you never know.

I would think that anyone with less than 300 points isn't a contender even if they won 4 races (half the remaining ones).
However with the two double points races an outsider could carry it over to the final race. What is notable is that Ganassi has really struggled this year and that wins over the first 8 races have been remarkably widespread.
Hunter-Reay, Carpenter, Power, Pagenaud, Castroneves, Huerta.

That's a wide spread of winners and in Houston little more than 1.4 seconds covered the entire field. that would make Indycar the most competitive field in any major open wheel formula anywhere so its a bit of a lottery in any road race.
Ovals are a little more predictable.

Montoya's win at Pocono means that he's now in the thick of the battle. Briscoe has improved dramatically as well.

Yannick should be qualifying in the top 10 on the grid
Ryan Hunter-Reay said in his victory lane interview after his win in Iowa that this season, a lot of drivers are going to have chances at winning the championship when the final race comes around.

Do you also think that when the series goes to Fontana, all 3 Penske drivers plus Pagenaud and Hunter-Reay will all still be in the championship hunt?

Power, Helio and Hunter Reay will rise to the top. Montoya is fast but just hasn't the edge over the other two. I've got a funny feeling Helio will win it in the end.

Fontana awards 100 points. I'm sure that at least five drivers will be in the hunt.

Ganassi's Dixon and Kanaan have climbed to 6th and 8th. But I think they can't fight for the title, and neither Muñoz and Marco.

Chevrolet has 5 drivers in the top 8 and 8 drivers in the top 13. Also, the Carpenter/Conway duo has 386 points, which would place them sixth!

Id be happy if any of the top 5 took the title. But Will Power should be miles ahead by now without the errors, HunterReay too.

Mr consistent Castroneves has driven smart as with last year but that will only be enough if others continue to throw points away

Dixon is quietly hanging around just outside the top 6... could he repeat his late-season charge of last year?

Would be nice to see either Power or Castroneves get a championship I guess, but I'd really like to see Pagenaud make a charge. Montoya's looking convincing these days too.

Should be an interesting rest of the season. Thanks NaBUru38 for keeping this thread updated.

Power is going to shoot himself in the foot, just like he has done repeatedly.
As long as Castroneves keeps his nose clean, the championship is his.

Well I never thought I'd be saying it when he was up to 150 points behind, but with the tracks remaining it seems like Dixie could be a late contender afterall. With a recent run of 5-4-5-7-1st, he's really putting in some consistency now. His 18th and 19th at Houston was what really killed him in points in races that he finished 1st and 2nd last year.

So the remaining tracks:

Dixon, Power and Wilson dominated Sonoma last year. Power was slightly faster though, so I'm expecting he'll be the man to beat. Helio was not as good last year at Sonoma - I think Dixon past him twice on track, or maybe I'm thinking of Dario.

That just leaves the ovals. The Penske's should be okay at Milwaukee, but Ryan is very good there as well.

Then there's Fontana, and seeing the way Ryan dominated Indy he'll be fast at Fontana too I would think. But so will the Penske's. So will Ganassi. I think Pagenaud is out of it now, the ovals will point him backwards. He may get some solid top 5's but that's about it.
Montoya is only in there due to his massive points haul at Pocono so I think he could slip back or at least I hope he does. It would be seriously bad if Juan got owned in Nascar for several years then returns to Indycars and wins it on his first attempt.

This is a race between Will, Ryan and Helio. If Ryan didn't win at Indy, and had some bad luck ie finishing 29th like Dixon did or 26th like Kanaan, then he'd probably be down in about 10th in points and out of it. Take away Montoya's Pocono win and he'd be as far back as maybe 12th.

If any one of those top 6 in points has a bad run at Fontana - they're done. Ed Carpenter could be the spoiler in the finale.

Standings after Mid-Ohio:

1. Will Power (Penske Chevy), 548
2. Hélio Castroneves (Penske Chevy), 544 (-14)
3. Ryan Hunter-Reay (Andretti Honda), 485 (-63)
4. Simon Pagenaud (Schmidt Honda), 484 (-64)
5. Juan Pablo Montoya (Penske Chevy), 447 (-101)
6. Scott Dixon (Ganassi Chevy), 440 (-108)

I don't think that Dixon can win the championship. If he ends 3rd at the next two races and wins at Fontana, that gets him 170 points to reach 610. Power can reach that score by ending 10th at the next two races and 18th at Fontana.

Like you said, this is a race between Will, Ryan and Helio.

Fun facts:

Hunter-Reay is the only driver with 3 wins this year. Power, Pagenaud and Conway have 2 each. Another six drivers have a win: Castroneves, Dixon, Montoya, Bourdais, Carpenter and Huertas.

The top drivers with no wins are Kanaan (9th, 4 podiums), Muñoz (7th, 3 podiums) and Andretti (10th, 2 podiums).

Power and Castroneves lead in podiums this year with 6 each. Hunter-Reay has 5, Kanaan has 4, and Montoya and Muñoz have 3 each.

19 drivers have a podium, including Newgarden, Hawksworth and Rahal (16th-18th) in addition to Huertas (19th, 1 win).

The top drivers with no podiums are Briscoe (11th) and Wilson (14th), both of which have a 4th and a 6th finish as best results.

So, Power has a 51-point lead over Castroneves before the last race.

Fontana awards 100-80-70-64-60 points for the top 5. There's 1 bonus point for the polesitter, 1 point for each driver who leads a lap, and another 2 points for the driver with most laps led.

So drivers may score up to 104 points. Meanwhile, the 22nd finisher gets 16 points.

Pagenaud still might be champion if he wins, Power returns early, etc.

- o -

Now let's see some scenarios for Castroneves. If they tie in points, Power would win the title for his three wins:

If Castroneves wins and gets the 4 bonus points, Power would need a 7th finish and a bonus point for leading a lap

If Castroneves wins and gets no bonus points, Power would need an 8th place and a bonus point.

If Castroneves ends 2nd and gets no bonus points, Power would need a 16th finish and a bonus point.

If Castroneves ends 3rd and gets no bonus points, Power would need a 21st finish and a bonus point.

Power will probably flunk it in the pits but perhaps this time he'll be lucky enough not foul things up sufficiently to lose the championship.
