How much downforce?
Does anobody know how much downfoce can generate GT car such as Ferrari 550 running in Le Mans at 240 kph?

Around 1500 lbs. at 200 mph. So about 850 lbs. at 150 mph (240 kph).

How much drag is created at that speed though?

Here are some figures I generated based on the Corvetter C5R:
C5R Cd: .55 Frontal area: 2.1 m^2 Hp: 650 (585 at wheel) Downforce: 1500 lbs @ 200 mph Drag: 1272 lbs @ 200 mph Top speed: 190 mph These are very generic so shouldn't be taken as exacting, but simply ball park. |

Mike, for your calculation ,do you use the speeds in curves to determinate the downforce ?
Have you any data about the friction coefficient of tyres ? This interests me a lot ! |

PascaLM,
No, its a WAG--Wild Ass Guess. I have an idea of the L/D and calculate drag based on power and top speed. From there the L/D comes into play to determine the downforce. All very sketchy ultimately but it is some what ballpark... |

OH, I expected more something like 2500 lbs@150 mph.
Why it is so big difference between LMP1 category and GTS category in range of downforce. GTS cars have big wings, they are flat bottomed with rear diffusor so aerodynamics of this cars is nearly same sa LMP. |

The wide roof would cut down the efficency of the rear wing big time compared to a LMP. Also the GTS cars don't have front diffusers... at least not that im aware of.

Actually the aero characteristics between LMP and GTS are quite different. Architectures is different as Patrick B points out with the roof structure being a impedment on a GTS car. The double element wings LMPs are allowed is also a big difference add to that the front diffuser as mentioned, raised nose monocoque, and the trick developments in regards to the front pontoon fenders and it all begins to add up substantially. Though ultimatley I do think GTS cars can generate approaching, if not exceeding in high downforce, 2000 lbs. so therefore the 1500 lbs. is clearly doing them a disservice. I'd say L/D is around 1.5:1 if not slightly better in some cases.

Would the Maserati produce significantly more downforce than the C5-R, with its long nose and tail etc.

JAG,
One would certainly think that would be the case. Certainly mid-engined cars like the Saleen have a potential for an aero advantage with the green house furhter away from the wing. But the Maserati's longtail pushes it even further back. Saleen can't respond (nor Corvette) as they are limited by the road car's shape. Maserati built a road car that had advantages as a race car (over other GTS cars). It seems to me to clearly be a homologation special. |

The ACO/FIA meeting may address this problem.
Don't be suprised if the Maserati is shunted into another class, or has to conform to different regs. |

It would be ironic to see the MC12 put into the LMP1 class after all the work Maserati had to build a GTS winner... hihgly improbable, but i would like to see it
