In the good old days, Formula Libre was for anything on 4 wheels, but changed later for open wheel or closed wheel classes. At Brands in '75, Gerry Marshall and DTV entered Baby Bertha for a laugh, ending up winning and beating Philip Guerola's F. Atlantic March.
Not sure who took the pic below, taken from Gerry's book 'Only Here for the Beer' with no mention but credit to them.

Formula Libre should be encouraged today in my view, too many small grids, too many exciting cars hidden away with nowhere to race. Also too many club level championships. A series of libre races for fun with no championship to worry about, which club level racing is all about. The Eight Clubs races at the Walter Hayes show how much fun and how good 'libre' racing can be.

I agree too, we should have something to get more of these cars onto grids. I suppose the main difference between the FLibre of old when Tony Trimmer, Alo Lawler, Geoff Farmer etc... were at it and today is that a lot of those types of cars are now in the BOSS series. Whatever's done would need some thought so as not to cause damage to that series.

Isn't BOSS down to about 8 or 10 cars now anyway ? I don't think a libre series will do any damage to BOSS as libre will be a UK based series and will probably attract cars that would not be competitive in BOSS in any event, such as late F2 cars and maybe a few early F3000's.

Much as I'd love to see the big banger Formula Libre of old, nowadays we can only hope to get goodly sized Libre grids filled with Formula Jedi, Formula Renault 1700 or 2 litre, or Vauxhall Lotus, or ARP F3, or Historic F3 or F2, or Monoposto 1200, 1600, 1800 or 2000, or Formula Four, or FF Zetec, or FF Duratec, or FF2000, or, or, the list is endless. That is the idea anyway.

Which monoposto already has!

Formula libre has to be aimed at the bigger bangers, but without the major costs of the Boss championship

Which is where even the boss can't muster the entry's so can'y really see formula libre taking off!

Yeah but, no but, yeah but... if I wanted to mirror the Gerry Marshall vs Single Seaters in the old Formula Libre with my 1990's version of Bertha, where can I do it? Eh? Just for a laugh, and of course, the beer.

Rob.

Diz, I really don't see any reason why should not be able to tempt some old F3000/late F2 cars out in your Libre Series. There seem to be quite a few of them about and some of them hillclimb so why not go libre racing.
I would love to own and race an early F3000 and if a Libre series got off the ground to give me somewhere to race it at relatively low cost then I could probably justify buying one. These sort of cars and especially late F2 cars dont really have anywhere to race outside of Euroboss and are therefore quite good value. Bearing in mind the races would be say 20 mins long the engine mileage would be low and I suspect that you could get 2 seasons between re-builds.
It would be great to get a libre series off the ground and I really hope you succeed as these cars need somewhere to race. If you get a race at any quick circuit, eg CC, Thruxton, Donington, Silverstone or Mallory then you can count me in and I will bring out our early 80's Dallara F3 car without air restrictor and with full ground effects which should be fairly quick...
Happy new year to one and all

Late F2s would be in anyway as they are only 2 litre.

All the Libre races I ever raced in were run at the end of the event and were mainly made up of cars which had raced in other championships during that day. There were only ever about 6 cars which had turned up for that race alone. Lots of fun though, it made a change to be racing soneone different.

Formula Libre used to be well supported as a race in it's own right. You are probably thinking of the 'end of day Invitation race Bob.
Yes it will be lots of fun and it will make a change to be racing against different drivers and types of car.
I will be running four Libre concept classes at Anglesey on 26th March.
As well as the * 'Single Seater Formula Libre', there will be races for
* 'Saloon Car Libre'
* 'Sports Car Libre'
* 'Historic Sports Car and Historic Saloon Car Libre'
So the chance to be racing against different drivers and types of car is available to everybody.

Going back to the old days at Croft (before it closed on 25th October 1981) Formule Libre (Correct spelling) was aways the last race on the card. Great battles between the F2/Formula Atlantic cars and occasionally there would be an F1 car and the odd F5000 car. Excellent

The extra single seater race put on at Combe when the club F3 failed was effectively a Formula Libre with a 2 litre limit. I think they intend doing it regularily, it would be nice to see that have an open class for F3000's etc. We were going to do the Combe race if we got back from the previous weekends Croft races with no damage. Regrettably, that happy state of affairs didn't prevail.

Given the trouble Castle Combe have had with noise I cannot see an F3000 getting past the noise police with a 108dB limit. I remember in British F3000 a few years ago the cars ran to maybe a 118dB limit with big silencers but I cannot see 108dB being possible

Yes shame that the last time formula 1 and 3000 raced at combe was in the euro Boss championship in 1997

But alas the local NIMBY's complained to the local council who took the circuit to court with only 5 complaints and won over the many thousands that pleged support the circuit so the 108dba limit was set!

AS far as i know the formula libre race was a one off due to the club f3 being cancelled due to lack of entry's, even though it was wet it was an excellent race with Nelson Rowe doing the giant killing in elderly ff1600 a brill drive.

Sounds like some fun racing you've got there, would enter if I had a license, car and a way of getting there....

Good luck with getting it off the ground.

You may be interested to hear that Knockhill is running an "open" single seater race at its Speedfair event in July.
Apparently our little Jedi could well be up against an F1 Tyrrell, with Sir J Stewart watching, and a few other interesting machines.
That is if I can manage to get over the gearbox disintegrating and poking a hole in the crankcase on the first lap of practice at Oulton on Saturday, which I haven't yet!

I remember Combe being host to John Jordans F5000 Lola and Alo Lawlers Mclaren, as well as other recent (then, 84ish) F1 cars. Wish those effin NIMBYs had never got near the place, damn that village for being so pretty!

BTW have you really got a Dallara 382/3/4? Thats a rare bird indeed - ALfa or Toyota power?

driftwood has a lot of promise if they can keep it on the circuit!
Libre means free so anythings goes
RACMSA banned the word Libre in 1990 so any races for cars have to be "open single seater" races upto 2.5 litre
BOSS is really the old libre format to get around the RACMSA stupid ruling
in the old days we had libre races and guys entered all manmer of formula cars and the odd f1 f5000 turned up
we also had the aurora series then later the hscc races for "F1" cars

also you cannot run open and closed wheel cars in the same race these days so baby bertha racing f5000 car are long gone !!

yes bring back Libre with bigger engines and let rover v8 march 86b f3000 cars run with f3000 f2 f3 type cars
speed differential is an issue and u either have to limit the cc level to over 1700 cc cars or inisist on percentage of pole time say 120%
