i think i am the last male driver of a real special saloon mini still racing on circuits in uk

http://www.ianhardy.net/gallery/main..._itemId=106690

Andy why did you not bring your mini to lydden in 2009 for the fastest mini race?
You would of given Bill Richards a run for his money

That took a lot of hard work and no small amount of risk getting that up there with a pair of steps and a little Massey Ferguson 35 with a loader on it, it's about 22 foot long and VERY heavy

Pete Edwards owned it pal if there's another one this year ill defiantly bring it down .did B/R race his metro? i think Harvey death probably as the fastest mini in the country although there is no mini in the car unlike mine which as all mini suspension hubs etc

be good to get them all together to sort once and for all

There is very loose talk of a race in 2011.
It wont be Lydden though, probably Brands Hatch or Snetterton.
Bill used the Mini not the Metro.
But yes it would be great to sort this out. Harveys, Andys, Bills etc

Hi Andy, quite well actually, mind you this was in the very early days of spaceframe saloons. The first I came across was Richard Long, who was quick, but my old girl was just as quick, so we had some really good dices. The maguire mini's were the end of Special Saloons as far as we (the pioneers of the sport) were concerned, they were NOT really saloon cars at all, and so, we thought this was a little bit unfair, ungentlemanly, if you see what I mean. The guys that I raced against that had the no nonsense special saloon cars, were people like Terry McNally, Roger Williamson, Les Nash, Peter Baldwin and so on. Peter had to go spaceframe to survive in the class, but I much preferred the original types of special saloon. But then I would wouldn't I Andy Ha,ha.
Looking through some old stuff yesterday I came across a piece of paper that reminded me that when I crashed one of my early Anglias, I sold the body to Mick Hill, who shoehorned the jag unit into it. I had forgotten about that.
I also found all the bills from people such as Cosworth, and my engine builder Phil Marks, which I thought were extortionate! But by todays prices.....nuffin mate. Be Lucky!
Gerry. ps Yes the last two were 1 litre. Prior to that 1760.

OK, I can confirm that the Classic Sports Car Club (CSCC) has announced a revival race for the Modsports and Special Saloons type cars that were such a feature of the UK club racing scene in the 1970 & 80s. The race will take place at Mallory Park on August Bank Holiday Monday, 29 August 2011. The race is open to all Modsports and Saloons, Special & Super Saloons, Thunder Saloons and Donington GT type cars and will be free to acceptable cars that raced in period.

The CSCC can confirm that Joe Ward has entered Baby Bertha, Jon Lee has entered Tony Hazlewood’s Dafnee and Dave Taylor has entered the ex Mick Hill Beetle. Other special cars of the period are planning to join.

The CSCC hopes that there will be sufficient interest generated to run further races later in the year, leading to a regular series for similar modified cars in 2012.

Baby Bertha will be on display on the CSCC’s stand at the Race Retro show in February to publicise the event.

Owners of cars that they feel may be eligible are requested to get in touch with the club.

There are no Tech Regs formed as yet (outside oif what is applicable for the Blue Book, obviously), as this is aimed at existing cars that may have raced in period. If there is sufficient interest then regs for a new series can be considered, with the help of interested participants.

Lets get these fantastic cars back on track!

I would love to have a race against these great cars in my current Classic Thunder Sunbeam Lotus. I did a couple of races in the Special Saloons/GT's in 1986/87 against the likes of Ginger Marshall in my first Sunbeam Lotus, that car was arched/dry sumped/Plastic windowed with a Moonstone Blue/Silver stripe livery.
So although its not the same car, it would have the original driver who raced back then and it is a similar car with original shell/block/head from 1979 and with the whole 'Triggers Broom' Theory that should make it more than eligible? Unless those big boys are scared of a Hot Hatch?....

I'm just going on to f*ceb**k and post that Joss called The Bullet "Triggers Broom" and see what he thinks of that!

I shall redouble my efforts to get at least one of my cars ready.

It ain't the finger Al, it's the crankshaft that has to come out, and then the block needs stripping right down before it can go for investigation (to see if it'll hone) Once I know what it's like, I can then order the replacement piston(s). Then we'll be heading in the right direction.

I'm burning the candle at both ends at the moment with work, but once we get sorted out in to the project, I should have a little time to spend on it each week.

I know that Skodas were very popular in Special Saloons for a long while but does anyone know where they all are now? We have had very good interest for the CSCC revival race at Mallory but no sign of a Skoda yet. If anyone has contact details for any Skoda Special Saloon owners I'd be grateful for a PM, or please encourage them to contact the CSCC..
