1999 "X" wings by Mike Gascoyne

I recently came across a reference to some sort of "X" wing developed in 1999 by Mike Gascoyne at Jordan; does anyone know what these wings consisted of or how they were layed out?

The X wings where in 1998.

Introduced in the Argentinean GP (rd3) Ferrari, Jordan, Tyrell, Sauber ran them.

They extended from the top of the side pods at around 45drgees and are basically a small wing on top of an arm.

They where banned pretty quickly as they where dangerous in the pits (getting caught up in the fuel hoses.

I have no pics but I am sure some one will post one soon.

Tyrell actually pioneered the "x-wings" back in 1997, but as the didn't seem to make a slow car fast enough to trouble anyone, nobody said anything about them! when other teams started using them to more effect, the were banned for safety reasons (as champ69 mentioned) after Jean Alesi got one caught on an airline and they were banned also for "asthetic" reasons (i.e...they were pig ugly!) if memory serves me right, only McLaren and Williams didn't test them at some point.

Well here's a couple of examples. Prost sometimes had to run one "X" wing on their car during the race, so they could refuel the car

And the other one, both of these are at the 1998 Australian GP.

I missed them because of the WAY they were banned.Mad moorosely thought up an excuse,so they went.incredibly stupid the way this sport is run.Yes it's great having someone dominant in control for everyones good, but what max and bernie do is no good for anyone.

Gascoyne actually said in an interview how the banning of the X wings set back development of the '98 Tyrrell by a good couple of months.

Some other interesting add-ons that swiftly got banned were these:

Didn't Williams use something similar at the Austrian GP in 2000, except the wing was attached right on the airbox a little behind the camera?

No quite Nicholas. Was Monaco GP. And I believe that at Hungaroring too. Jordan's (and Arrows; they had a similar approach as Jordan) were quickly banned because those ... err... stuff... actually blocked driver's view. OOps sorry. The Arrows pic did not load when I hit the submit button.

IIRC, back around the time of the race in 2001, one of the German F1 programmes picked up on a paddock rumour that, upon seeing the front wing, either Bernie or Max Moseley (can't remember which) was supposed to have gone up to Tom Walkinshaw, pointed to unsightly wing and said "that f*cking thing has to go".

The Arrows version reminded me of a potato peeler (or perhaps a potato masher) when I saw it.

I do think some effort might be put into surgically sculpting the drivers' skulls to make them more aerodynamically appropriate. It seems silly to have a sphere with bumps sticking out of it to determine the shape of the helmet, when with a little brain-compressing and bone-surgery we could see scoop-shaped flat-heads adapted for laminar flow. Some strenghtening of the cervical vertebrae might also be necessary, to sustain the downforce loading, but this would be a relatively minor issue once the major re-configuring of the brain pan was accomplished.

the McLaren of 1995 has to be one of the worst looking cars of all time! Mansell must have been on a lot of money to say at the launch that it looked good, and that he hoped that it was as fast as it looks!

DC has a very funny shaped head - perhaps more goes on behind the scenes than we know.

Having typed this sentence innocently - please fellow forum users don't denegrate this post by now joking about DC 'willy' - that sort of stuff is above you!
