It was quite a while ago now so hard to find links. Essentially the GT1 championship became a series for re-branded GT3 cars. In the final series, to meet the obligations to commercial partners SRO were essentially funding sections of the grid (obviously not sustainable).

16 cars was the minimum requirement, and usually there'd only be about 3/4s of that requirement with a few weeks to go before each season, at which point SRO stepped in and funded the remaining entries.

You can see from the final season when it all fell apart. Essentially the "Team Russia" and "Team China" entries weren't genuine entries.
