Holman Moody/Alan Mann Racing 64 Fairlane 427 FIA
Anyone got any pics, info, results, whereabouts of the car that was built for the daytona 24hr??
Would love to know the history of this car, especially after it went to race w/ alan mann. Cheers Pauly Zombie289 |

I think it was a H-M Fairlane at Spa last year in the 6 hours that was disqualified. The sight of that thing staying with the GT40s for lap after lap and then out-dragging it through Eau Rouge and pulling away from it was truly awesome! Pity it was later disqualified.......

Something to do with power steering from memory of reading another thread Al. The 427 must be a squeeze in the Fairlane engine bay! Not to mention the weight, it would be a handful. Roger - were they 427 GT40s or smaller capacity?

The really interesting thing is that in 1964 the Fairlane was hardly used after Alan Mann bought it because the 289 Mustang-newly introduced-was so much better.

Now that this thread has popped up again I thought I'd drag the old AMR ad that 1800TISA posted in the 1963 Galaxie Lightweight thread into here. Interestingly it says the car is sorted for racing but does not refer to any actual races?

I've got some old quotes I got off of Alan for a sadly defunct mag article I was researching several years ago somewhere. I'm sure there was some mention of the Fairlane and the reasons he bought it over! Hopefully I can dig it out and see if it's anything worth contributing to the thread.

Fireball Roberts the Michael Schumacher of his day
Fireball Roberts was truly the Michael Schumacher of his day including driving for Ferrari at LeMans in 1962 as well as for Ferrari at a number of races in 1963 . . . therfore the fact the Fairlane handles well becomes much less of a surprise in 1964 or 2006 at Spa, not to mention that the same 427 NASCAR engines soon after end up in the GT40 Mark II's that won Daytona, Sebring and LeMans in 1966.
The second part of the answer to your question is every member of the FIA HMSC now has an extensive dossier on the 1964 Fairlane Thunderbolt which includes Ford Motor Company OEM Performance Catologs, history of Glenn Fireball Roberts, Holman & Moody history, ACCUS the USA ASN history, the FIA International Racing Calendars for 1963 and 1964, details of the 1964 FIA International American Challenge Cup race, other GT and Prototypes of 1963 and 1964, the original specifications of the 1964 Fairlane, and numerous personal statements and letters from people who were involved and still alive which confirms the facts and history. The magic of Historic racing is seeing these special race cars again alive and in action not sitting in a private collection or museum. History, when allowed, can speak for itself as it did in 1964. |
