European round of ALMS Scrapped!

A European round of the ALMS in 2003 has been scrapped. Here is a offical calender for the 2003 season. All rounds will be in North America, shame but still perhaps the ALMS will come to Europe again in 2004..

Good news in my opinion, though a shame for you Euro fans.

It is my opinion that particularly in this economic climate that running in a few race in Europe would be financially challenging for many of the entrants. While I don't like cost contained series per say, an eye on costs is important.

For now, the series needs to expand its base and exposure to the point that sponsors and manufacturers see this as a valid and economically viable possibility. This Big picture is still missing, although the product on the track has been pretty good.

It's too bad from the perspective of teams who are competing in Le Mans. They now have to hang about in Europe from early May to mid June, with no racing.

I wonder if maybe FIASCC will have an event of interest to the teams in question? A-1 Ring? Would FIASCC consider allowing ALMS entries, with minimal revisions to the cars (add a double roll-hoop, but allow the cars to keep their restrictors and carbon brakes) and run in a separate non-points class?

Oh, I guess to be fair I should include Zandvoort and Brno for the FIA-GT in that proposal.

(Can you see my bias? )

Well some of the FIA GT cars do race at Le Mans and there is, Barcelona, Magny-Cours and Brno before Le Mans in the FIA GT series.
