Talk about the left hand not telling the right hand what they were doing.... I think reason for 10am shootout was to allow time for repairs before Sunday race. As only 10 cars are in the shootout, the rest would spent all Saturday at the track for a late practice session then very late or all night putting in race engines etc. Back then the teams were in pit bunkers with sheds, tents etc out the back so it would take a while to get all the gear back to the tent to even start work. By running the P session earlier, the majority of teams could get the work done, get a little sleep and be back at the track at 5:00 AM ready for the race morning warm up. Moving the shootout to the afternoon was a by-product but of course network 10 loved the idea and it WAS good for ratings - can't see it reverting personally. These days, with garages on pit lane, later start on Sunday and larger head counts for the teams, the timing of the session would probably be less of an issue but that is why the change was made at the time. |
