online volunteering

Hi all, just wondered if anyone can offer guidance to newbie/trainee. On sign up/volunteering forms and online systems, do we select 'incident' as a default for trainees and then get allocated to duties by Post Chief on the day? When choice is flag, incident, pits etc I mean - and I am trainee track rather than trainee specialist (so not pits for sure - yet).
Many thanks!
Cath

Volunteer for the duty you want to to, as allocations will be made at sign-on, not on post.

As far as I know there's nothing to stop you volunteering for specialist duties - just make sure that you get signatures on the relevant page in your Personal Record Card.

Thanks Dave - so far I have been allocated to flags or incident once on post (as a trainee) rather than at sign on (for race events - different when I have done speed events). I will vary my selection a little then when signing up as keen on flagging (except those pesky blues sometimes)!! Hoping to add pits to brief once I have more experience on banks.

That's interesting. Everywhere I've marshalled duties have been allocated at sign on, irrespective of an individual's grade.

Don't worry about blue flags - you WILL get them wrong. Just get the yellows right!

Probably just due to the fact I have only done a couple of race events so far and then only a few speed events too, Dave! Very new here.

Will look to vary my roles though.

And yes, I realised when last on yellows that the blue flags are not easy and so require learning from errors as well as when it goes well

Many thanks,
Cath

A former regular of this parish who's now sadly moved upstairs used to say that if you haven't chucked the blue away in disgust at least once in a weekend, you're not trying hard enough

In terms of role - as Dave said, you should volunteer for the thing you'd like to spend the day doing. As a trainee (and a fairly new one to boot!) you might find yourself spending the odd session here and there with the PC/flaggie on days you asked to do incident but that'll depend entirely on the people you're with and whether you want to or not.

Whatever you end up doing, enjoy yourself!

Dead right. A colleague once told me 'there have been week-ends when I didn't get a blue wrong, but only because I was doing a different duty.'

Fabulous advice - thank you. Happy to do whatever role is helpful on the day of course, but know from my first two flag duties that I loved that in particular. So much to learn and really excited for my first full season next year.

Snetterton has a system similar to this, as you sign on to a "zone" then the senior PC for that zone allocates posts and duties. Well it used to up to a year ago.

And some Post Chiefs also rotate their team (particularly trainees) to give you a chance to do incident and flags on the same day. When I started a few years ago, this happened at Thruxton, Castle Combe and Mallory.

As for chucking a blue flag, since I now own a nice set of flags (thanks Chigley!), I try not to do that anymore

Yes, that makes sense too - I have so far been doing same thing throughout each of the days I have completed, but was once offered the chance to stand down from flags on first time if I found it too much - but loved it too much to swap to incidence at lunch time
Thanks all - I am sure it all works out and main thing is to keep learning (and hopefully not dropping flags, although I have already heard many horror stories!)

Hello Cath, for the BMMC SE region the online volunteering information sent to the Chief Marshals will include your MSA registered grade (trainee/ungraded if you do not have an MSA grade). If you mark one of the other grades listed, this will also be included after trainee. It will then be up to the Chief Marshal to allocate duty. This is the current practice for SE region, but there is a meeting of BMMC volunteering coordinators very shortly when this may be clarified.

That's helpful to know too - so it sounds like I can tick whichever duty (flag/incident) and it doesn't matter as CM will still know I am trainee so they can make decisions according to need/making sure not too many trainees together etc.

As a trainee - its good to select different duties - spending time between flag and incident, as to upgrade to the next level you need to do an assessment on both flag and incident.

Don't discount the specialist roles - working in the pits, on the startline and in assembly have their own challenges and rewards. Even as you move up through the ranks of trackside marshalling, you can always sign on to do a "specialist" role.

Flagging is great, and getting the blue right is always a good feeling. but there are always those moments you kick yourself for blue-ing a pair battling for position, or missing the leader.
If you enjoy it - keep at it!
Soon you'll be looking at getting your own set of flags

Thanks for this - yes, good to have range of experiences so I have duly volunteered for a mix online of flag and incident (and of course happy to be told on the day to do something different) and was planning to get some pit experience once I have some incident/flag experience under my belt
Looking forward to the next season!
