Everything is either outlawed or spec even down to engine revs, and now apparently KERS output. Everythig else is set in such tight confines and restrictions, that there is effectively only one option differntiated by a mm or 2 at best.
I would tend to agree with you on this.

Are Red Bull producing the KERS (didn't they try their own, causing a fire in the factory) themselves and flogging a few to Enstone, or is Enstone or Renault making their own? It's surprising Lotus (Hingham) might not go for KERS when it's going to be more useful in 2011 than it was in 2009.

I believe that Lotus (that's the current one) intend to get the more important aspects of the car right first before fitting any KERS device to its cars. It's about 3.5 seconds behind the pace just on aero alone. KERS isn't really going to put much of a dent in that.

Yea, apparently a single 747 uses more fuel on takeoff than the entire F1 grid does for a whole season. So I dont really buy the whole green argument either.

747s don't usually just take off just to provide entertainment, and don't get televised all around the world when they do it. If they did, most of them would have been moth-balled a long time ago! Most of them do it out of necessity or they don't take-off at all. 747s are also making way for more economical types of passenger and commercial aircraft. They're going the same way that Concorde went. World class awesome engineering, but just too costly and too polluting to run.

And it's not just the fuel is it!

If you take into account things like wind tunnels, each one uses the same amount of electricity that a small town does. Towns need electricity, F1 doesn't need wind tunnels. Something made patently obvious by Virgin's F1 car this season.

I believe that even William's have two! Not that it appears to be doing them much good at the moment.

It's said that when a wind tunnel needs to be turned on, the F1 Factory has to call the local power station to inform them of the likely power drain across the grid!

Personally, I don't think that it will be too long before wind tunnels are made obsolete.

I don't know about that, but as it's enforcable to limit model sizes and speed, why not have a rule that the wind tunnel can only be used Monday to Friday during normal business hours?

Wind tunnel models are already 60% that of an actual F1 car, unless they wish to exchange any of their 4 days of straight-line aerodynamic tests for 4 hours of full scale wind tunnel testing (maximum of 16 hours).

The problem seems to be that wind tunnels cause a whole load (sorry) of problems when they are being started up from rest, so Monday to Friday during working hours is going to be a real pain for the power stations.

It looks like the whole 'green' deal will get a rubber stamp tomorrow. Along with the new rear wings for 2010 etc.

Rules were rubber stamped today.

Points of interest from a motive power POV include:

From FIA website:

1. "the power units will be four cylinders, 1.6 litre with high pressure gasoline injection up to 500 bar with a maximum of 12,000 rpm."

2."The engines will deliver a 35% reduction in fuel consumption and will feature extensive energy management and energy recovery systems, while maintaining current levels of performance."

3."In 2013, five engines will be permitted per driver, but each year after that the limit will be four."

What about the 2013 chassis rules? I thought the idea was to go back to underbody aero, venturi tunnels and all that? Or has that been abandoned along with any other half decent aero rules change?

- Revisions to driving and driver conduct
- A limit on the width of the fast lane in the pits
- The introduction of a regulation permitting the Race Director to close the pit lane during a race for safety reasons
- The re-introduction of intermediate tyres for 2011
- Penalties to be applied to any driver who fails to use both specification of dry weather tyre during the race
- An amendment requiring gearboxes to be used for five consecutive races, instead of four
- Clarification on when cars can overtake the safety car
- A refinement to the principles of the regulations already agreed concerning moveable rear wings
- A better definition of the reference plane, and reinforcement of bodywork deflection tests, especially at the front of the reference plane

Amendments to the 2012 Technical Regulations were made in the following areas:

- A limitation on suspension uprights"

That's all there is on the FIA website at the moment.
