Anyone know what happened to the
B51 CanAm from 1980. At least 1 built and tested by the Newman Freeman team, which had reportedly ordered 4, in early 80. IIRC VDS also ordered 2 or 3. Were anymore completed, or even started, before the liquidation? And, does the first car still exist?? Last edited by John Turner; 25 Feb 2007 at 09:57. |

The prototype did race in 1982 or 1983. It is still around in vintage racing and I believe there's a second one lurking somewhere.

Just saturday I was going through J.A. Martin&Ken Wells book "Prototypes", reading about Pierre Honneger cars. They wrote that the Z&W Mazda GTP (http://www.racingsportscars.com/phot...-03-19-077.jpg) was "built by Holman-Moody around a honeycomb fibreglass tub from a Chevron, with uprights and other suspension components from a Lola T-333 and a Lola T-600....". I wonder if the tub is from the B51, after all the Z&W debuted at Daytona early '83, so possibly at that time the only Chevron car to feature that kind of chassis could have been the Can-Am...

The B51 contibuted to the Chevron (Bolton) downfall. The company kiitted up for at least 6 cars but Newman cancelled his order and (sorry Allen) only the one was built. The other bits were all scrapped.
It is still pretty original but hasn't raced since about 1984. Although I am a died in the wool Chevron man I must say that the B51 was neither the most beautiful or most successful car Chevron built (and I am being kind....) |

The B51 was being offered for sale for $80,000 in the US back in 2010:
