Why would any manufacturer invest in a hi-end touring car programme when the models they wish to promote will all be electric within the next 10 years? Surely the future is either cheap privateer cars (tcr) or an electric series

Well, STC2000 in Argentina runs spec engines and it's probably the touring car series with the most factory involvement worldwide...

Maybe in ten years, but I don't think the technology is there yet to provide engaging racing at permanent traditional race tracks (compared to FE street circuits), and I'm not sure the DTM fan base is ready for it either. Electric racing is a good marketing opportunity, but so far it's unproven as to whether it could support it's own dedicated event weekend at a proper circuit.

I'm sure there a few eyes watching to see how the Tesla EGT series unfolds.

That would work to some audience but honestly though, DTM's ship is sinking at this point when one manufacturer leaves the series.

And it's just rich how Mercedes and BMW are complaining Audi is using non-title contenders to slow down their drivers and brake testing:

Funny, how did Wehrlein win in 2015? Oh, and last year, BMW winning because of a speeding penalty for Audi which turned out to be erroneous. Man, what a joke this series has become.

Agreed.

This is just BMW crying that they haven't thought about it themselves. Motorsport is all about pushing the boundaries of the rules. The recent events have added to the sport IMHO.

That's a good information. Audi and BMW are committed to Class One and this information brings hope that we will see Lexus and Nismo (maybe Honda as well) in DTM in 2019. Berger also stated that the plan is to introduce factory-backed private teams apart from full manufacturer entries. Hopefully something good is being created for DTM future.

Private teams running cars has to be a good idea doesn't it? At the moment where do all the old DTM cars go? You see some out in Bergrennen and the like but generally they just vanish into the ether. Presumably the manufacturers just have massive warehouses full of DTM cars. It'd be good if the cars were released to private teams to run.

Also it's good to see the Lexus and Nissan being brought over for a run - certainly if the DTM is going to survive it needs to rely on more than just factory entries from Audi and BMW.

I also think this is a great way to get more manufacturers interested in the series, especially with no more closer to home thinking of entering

Incredible season for Rast, he was impressive and very fast almost every weekend. Awesome to see him crowned a champion, he was dreaming of driving in DTM and good that Audi gave him a chance.
I feel a bit bad for Ekstrom though, I'd been almost sure that he was going to make it prior to that round. But his performance this weekend was very poor.
Very dramatic and fascinating end to the season

Not sure what got into Ekstrom this weekend, missed another title there.

All in all an enjoyable season of racing from the DTM, very surprising.
