Nikon F55 and auto-focus with a 50-500mm lens
Hi folks
If it's not one problem with my Nikon it's another. Anyway, I use a Nikon F55 with either a 28-100mm or a 70-300mm lens without any problems. Carrie loaned me her Sigma 50-500mm lens today at Silverstone and we immediately discovered that I am unable to use the autofocus option in any mode (auto, sports, portrait etc...) when that lens is on my camera. It is a Sigma with a Nikon fit. Yet, I tried Carrie's Sigma (Nikon fit) 28-300mm lens and had no problems with the focussing. I can use the 50-500mm lens if I switch to manual focus but that's a bit of a pain. As I'm keen to get a 50-500mm lens I'd love to know why my camera doesn't seem to like it. Carrie and I have decided to throw it open to you lot on here for suggestions. Over to you folks! Last edited by Suzy; 2 Jun 2004 at 18:54. |

Just to add, I'm using the 50-500 on an F80 and have never had any trouble with the autofocus working on it.

Has nobody got any suggestions? I'm intrigued to know why this won't work.
Nothing on the Sigma website to say that the 50-500 won't work in autofocus with certain Nikon cameras. Suzy, didn't you also try new batteries in case that was a potential problem? |

I can only make a guess on this since I use Canon kit, but it may be something to do with the number of electrical contacts on the two different camera bodies. The drive signal for the autofocus will be via one of the contacts and if Suzy's camera has fewer contacts than yours then chances are that the autofocus is one that's missing.
If I remember right Nikon have two (at least) kinds of lens fittings D-type and G-type. Maybe this is a G-Type lens that only works with minimal function on an F55? |

 Exactly right, but reversed.  The "G" is the newer version as used on F-55, 65 & 75 series cameras.  I had the same problem with an older "D" Sigma 24mm lens on my N-75 (US version).  It worked perfectly on my older N-50.  I would wager that Carrie's camera is an F-50, 60 or 70.

Mine is an F80 and just hunted out the instructions for the lens which actually list the Nikon cameras that the AF will work with - the F55 isn't one of them.

Which probably explains it all. But I can use it in manual mode, so all is not lost.
