Update - Hinch out of ICU, full recovery expected

(Racer.com):

Quote:
UPDATED Wednesday, May 20: Verizon IndyCar Series driver James Hinchcliffe has been transferred out of the Intensive Care Unit at IU Health Methodist Hospital as the Canadian continues to make substantial improvement following surgery on May 18 for injuries to his pelvic area and upper left thigh. Upon further evaluation this morning, it was determined that Hinchcliffe will require no further procedures and is expected to make a full recovery from his injuries.

It seems as if the top A-Arm pierced the tub. The upper, rear-angled one, not the one connected to the damper. It's the "trailing link" if you will.

Complete assumption here. I'm guessing the shear came at the rod end, and it came through the tub at the same angle it was mounted.

Using carbon fibre would have avoided the piece flying at Hinchcliffe intact, but I wouldn't want a cloud of fine debris either. Not to mention we'd be seeing suspension failures left and right with the amount of rubbing and leaning that happens in close quarters racing with the DW12. Let's face it, James went side-on with the wall at 125Gs, and was injured by secondary debris with no broken bones (not sure if he suffered a concussion or not, he did get shaken around a fair bit).

That said, the part should have been replaced sooner, far too much mileage on it, and it was a first generation design prior to a reinforced version being introduced in 2013.

That is a great article about the Wood Brothers, but they did not build the Lotus, they instead did the pit stops. The Woods were well rehearsed and polished, and developed many techniques to insure swift, efficient pitting. The regular Lotus crew was there to prep the car and to step in if there had been a mechanical need.

No Jim Neighbors...it seems simple and sappy, but his singing of "Back Home Again in Indiana" was such a huge part of the Indy tradition. Part of the Big Deal of the Greatest Race.

That group has big shoes to fill. Surprised Jim made it this long, singing that is.

I knew Smokey Yunnick built 500 cars, but I guess never realized the Woods did too. Not surprising at all.

This is an interesting article on the Lotus 38. It mentions the Woods Brothers but only in their capacity in managing the pit-stops.

Crazy about the blackout. Thought those didn't exist anymore.

I really enjoyed the slideshow of vintage Indy pics at the end of the article.

Lotus 38 was specifically designed by Colin Chapman and Len Terry for Indianapolis. Larger then the F1 car because of the bigger engine and the fuel capacity. They pitted twice during the race. Only twice.

Honda is in damage limitation, Eriksen is in career survival mode. They are using Wurth Research to do the CFD, Wurth who famously argued with Patric Head that you didn't need a wind tunnel to do open wheel aero. CFD was the future till Wurth got fired from the Virgin F1 development team for nonperformance. HPDs sports cars have also fallen behind and become uncompetitive, they also have Wurth CFD only development. People forget that as powerful as CFD is, it is not real, it is still only a simulation. And with all simulations whether it be CFD, WAVE engine sim, or GT engine sim, they all have to be calibrated. The question to ask is why does HPD keep going back to Wurth every time? Wurth keeps getting his sims checked on the track and they keep not performing. Is this not the definition of insanity? You don't get different results from trying the same thing, try using a wind tunnel Mr Wurth?

Would help to actually read articles Posting and working, not the best of ideas. I now recall (obviously) the Wood Bros being utilized for pitstops, as outside of being mechanical geniuses, they were revolutionary in rapid pitstops as well.

They certianly do on ESPN3/WatchESPN for football, baseball, etc. I recall hearing about the blackout in the past, but it does seem a bit antiquated. I mean, I get why; it's Memorial Day weekend in Indianapolis. If I lived in the "area", I know where I'd be this weekend.

The weather looks to be, dare I say, perfect:
