Drivers and Teams' grid positions (2013)

Using a point system like 21,20,...,1,0 applied to grid positions, the totals after the two first GPs are:
Code:
Vettel 42 RBR
Massa 38 FER
Hamilton 37 MER
Webber 37 RBR
Alonso 36 FER
Rosberg 32 MER
Button 27 MCL
Räikkönen 27 LOT
Grosjean 25 LOT
Sutil 24 FOR
Hülkenberg 21 SAU
DiResta 20 FOR
Pérez 20 MCL
Ricciardo 17 STR
Vergne 14 STR
Gutiérrez 12 SAU
Maldonado 11 WIL
Bottas 10 WIL
Bianchi 6 MAR
Chilton 3 MAR
Pic 2 CAT
vdGarde 1 CAT
Code:
RBR 79 5 ----------------
FER 74 2 ---------------
MER 69 5 --------------
LOT 52 2 ----------·
MCL 47 7 ---------·
FOR 44 4 ---------
SAU 33 9 ------·
STR 31 3 ------
WIL 21 1 ----
MAR 9 3 --
CAT 3 1 ·
(The second number in Team's table is difference between team mates.)

Massa's 2nd position is a bit "lol" or "wtf", if we had thought about it half a year ago, but certainly the Brazilian is continuing the level of performance he showed in the last 2012 GPs. And, of course, the Ferrari is not exactly slow... And Fernando is not amused, it is for sure.

There is a bit of a gap between the three first teams and Lotus, 17 points is not a small amount, but it is too early in the season to say anything.

Mac is only 3 points ahead of Force (but just 5 behind Lotus), perhaps partially because of a not brilliant performance by Perez.

Williams is in a deep hole... , it is sad, but it is "just" 12 points behind Sauber and 10 behind Toro Rosso, so there is place for hope.

The "titanic" fight in the tail end is surprisingly(?) leaded by Marussia.

Perez, DiResta and Maldonado must be very disappointed with their form so far.

I can excuse Perez as he is getting used to a new team although it must hurt to be beaten by his replacement. The other two are not having a great year so far though; especially DiResta who is already struggling against Sutil .

This year could spell the end of Paul's competitive career if he can't kick on.

How is Paul struggling against Sutil, as I recall he out qualified him in Australia, Sutil was on the strategy that made him look amazing during the race, I admit he drove well and made the most of it but wasn't Di Resta told to hold station at the end when he could have got past, as for Malaysia surely that was more down to the weather in qualy than anything else, I thought Di Resta drove a stormer in the race, the less said about the pit stops the better though.

I expected Paul to be beating Sutil striaght away as Sutil has had a little while out. Id expect Sutil to get better as the season goes on too.

This is Paul's chance as it is his team now and Sutil is the out of favour returning bad boy.

(Note: I have used Webber's grid position without penalty. I know his car had less fuel than legally allowed, thus giving him a performance advantage, but I judge this effect as minor. My intention with these tables is to see the performance of cars/drivers, but not legal issues.)

Very close scores in the top end, now Hammy is the new king of qualy. The top drivers are Ferraris, Mercedes, Red Bulls and Raikko, and tailing them somewhere are Grosjean and Button.

Middle zone is formed typically with both Forces and Hulkenberg, adding the great (season of) Ricciardo from below and the lackluster Perez from above.

The "pre-tail" (the bottom end without Marussia and Caterham) is configured with Williamses, Gutierrez and Vergne. This the Purgatory of F1, no joy at all here.

The Sheol is obviously Marussia and Catherman. But Bianchi is the first human ever who want to go out of the Abyss.

From teams's perspective, the clear three leaders are Ferrari, Red Bull and Mercs, with Lotus hanging there (with a not-so-quick Grosjean).

Mac tries to recover from the mediocre beginning, but Force India is just near them. Toro Rosso and Sauber are there in the modest/decent zone (Sauber paying the handicap of Gutierrez).

Williams is approaching the catastrophe and Marussia continues dominating Caterham.

The worst team mate trophy (apart from Vettel ;-p ) goes to Gutierrez, who musters an average of 5.7 positions below Hulkenberg. Others poor shows are by Vergne (+4 positions), Perez (+3.7 positions) or... Webber (+3.3 positions, without penalty!). Alternatively, those cases show the good job of their respective team mates (but most of time is poor performance of the lesser driver, anyway).

Very interesting/intriguing the case in Ferrari's team. Alonso is beginning to show some psychological wear because of the situation (in some interviews). FA doesn't need a challenging team mate, that is a weak point in his mind.

Ummm... adding some little bits details. Average grid positions, discounting the worst position (discount = 60%). The line separations shows the gaps proportionally, to give a more intuitive view.
Code:

Hamilton 2.33
Vettel 2.33

Massa 3.33
Alonso 3.33

Rosberg 5.17 1.84
Webber 5.25
Raikkonen 5.42

Grosjean 7.67 2.25
Button 7.92

Sutil 10.50 2.58
Ricciardo 10.67
Hulkenberg 10.75
DiResta 10.83
Perez 11.25

Vergne 14.92 3.67
Maldonado 15.75
Gutierrez 16.33
Bottas 16.75

Bianchi 19.00 2.25

Chilton 20.17 1.17
Pic 20.75
vdGarde 21.58
It shows well the groups that we intuitively could guess:

-Head: Hamilton, Vettel, Massa, Alonso Regular pole contenders(?)
-Subhead: Rosberg, Webber, Raikkonen Almost...
-Middle good: Grosjean, Button Good but not enough
-Middle class: Sutil, Ricciardo, Hulkenberg, DiResta, Perez Not good, not bad
-Modest: Vergne, Maldonado, Gutierrez, Bottas Sad times
-Bianchi! Well, Bianchi!
-Bottom (no insult intended): Chilton, Pic, Van der Garde You know...

In terms of Q1, Q2 and Q3 segments. Four drivers are clearly stuck in Q1, with two of the 4 "Modest" class being in danger of not making the cut. Nine drivers are good favorites to reach Q3 (with Grosjean and Button having more risks), the tenth driver in Q3 should be among the 5 "Middle" class.

Table with segments Q1,Q2,Q3:
Code:
           Q3 Q2 Q1
Hamilton 3 0 0
Vettel 3 0 0
Massa 3 0 0
Alonso 3 0 0
Rosberg 3 0 0
Raikkonen 3 0 0
Webber 2 1 0
Grosjean 2 1 0
Button 3 0 0
Hulkenberg 1 2 0
Sutil 1 2 0
Ricciardo 1 2 0
DiResta 1 2 0
Perez 1 2 0
Vergne 0 2 1
Maldonado 0 2 1
Gutierrez 0 1 2
Bottas 0 1 2
Bianchi 0 0 3
Chilton 0 0 3
Pic 0 0 3
vdGarde 0 0 3
