Car Chases

What's the most memorable dice you've had with another car, on the road?
Mine was in Northern France, about 3 a.m. on twisty 'B' road. Up front was a local hero in a fantastic mid engined Renault 5 Turbo 2. We were in my much missed Carrera 3.2.
We reached up to 125mph during the 20 mininute excursion, with just a few yards between us. Life enhancing experience...... and we lived to tell the tale .

Tutt, tutt! Racing on the public road?

Greatly frowned upon, old boy, even in France!

It was about 6.30am one morning about 12yrs ago when I was going to work when a young lad pulled up beside me in a Holden Torana XU1. After I baited him with a slight rev of my worked RX3 it was on. We threaded our way through peak hour traffic and came up to another light and this time he was my bait as I was turning right but he didn't know it and I'm sure he didn't see the Falcon on the other side of the intersection with the pretty blue lights on the roof. I revved the Mazda and he dumped the Torana but I slowly turned and he fell into the clutchess of the law. Sucked in

Many years ago before the Pacific Highway to the North Coast of NSW was so heavily pacified as it is today. I was on a large capacity Yamaha and there was a guy travelling solo in a V8 Commodore. We sat on 140 plus in the middle of the night, but left each other plenty of room, would indicate when changing lanes etc. He'd wav me by at times.

It was an experience of comraderie with a complete stranger - just the two of us for about 250 klms and the open road inhabited by large trucks who would match your speed going down hill!

That's kph, I hope?

Not really a race, but a reasonable speed run through Nant-y-Garth pass in North Wales one icy February heading for a rally stage first thing in the morning. I was in a modified Talbot Sunbeam, 1.3 with 100bhp at the back wheels, being followed by an Escort Mexico who was happy to sit a few yards back. I suspect he didn't know the road as well as me, and while I concentrated on throwing the car sideways through a tricky tightening and slippery corner, I didn't notice him go sailing off the road behind me. It was only a couple of miles later on I realised he wasn't there. On the way back I noticed the gap in the railings, and to this day I hope he was OK.

Coming back from the Bathurst media day in 1997 on the Newell Highway early a.m. Just me and my car, the loneliness of the road, the passing interstate trucks grimly pressing onwards on their journey, the slow sunrise, tasty breakfast, somehow enjoying the solitude out there. God, it was beautiful...

There is nothing better than travelling at dawn - then on to sunrise. It is th ultimate in oneness with the vehicle, especially on a bike.

As my wife and I have family in Yamba and I enjoy the drive we always leave at midnight so to arrive when the sun is getting up. The last trip I went by myself in the trusty 1996 D/Cab 4x4 Mazda Bravo ute slightly modified and did my best time ever. Having three stops atleast 15minutes long each I arrived in 7hrs 15minutes.

Best was a joking stoplight duel with some punk in what was probably his dads Corvette. Jokingly revved him with my Chevy Astro van, when the light went green he stalled and I left him...A moment neither me or my friends in the van with me shall ever forget
