Moscow Classic GP / Cup of Peace and Friendship - you are invited

Good day to everybody!

If that is OK, I decided to make a separate thread for these series, since I would like to spread a word about them. To my great joy, Russia has stepped into historic racing recently and the thing is evolving very quickly with a great interest from veteran drivers. For those who never looked that up, USSR has quite a history in motor racing, although it has mostly been withing the borders of the country, but also across the Eastern bloc. The Cup of Peace and Friendship was, as it is sometimes referred to, 'the Formula 1 of the East', although of course the technical level was dictated by what has been mass-produced back in the day. Bulgaria, Czechoslowakia, GDR, Hungary, Poland, Romania and USSR were all part of that series, running across the categories - karting, touring cars, formula racing, rallying and autocross.

These days there is a rise of interest to that racing in Russia, and the Cup of Peace and Friendship has been revived this year as a two-stage competition. The first round was held up within the WTCC weekend in Russia (only a day later, with the qualis right after the WTCC races), while the second round visited Riga - a great historic Bikernieki racetrack. Tightly related to the CPF is the Moscow Classic GP, which ran in three rounds this year, all at Moscow Raceway.

In 2017 the series will keep evolving. The preliminary calendar is out, and here it is:
  • 10-12 June - Moscow Raceway, Volokolamsk, Russia - Cup of Peace and Friendship (Rd.1) + Moscow Classic GP (Rd.1) + Cup of Country (Rd.1). It is very possible that the 2017 Russian WTCC weekend will once again be held in the same weekend at the same track, like it did this year
  • 15-16 July - Moscow Raceway, Volokolamsk, Russia - Moscow Classic GP (Rd.2)
  • 12-13 August - Bikernieki, Riga, Latvia - Cup of Peace and Friendship (Rd.2) + Dzintara Aplis (Rd.2)
  • 2-3 September - NRing, Nizhniy Novgorod, Russia - Cup of Country (Rd.2)
  • 16-17 September - Smolensk Ring, Smolensk, Russia - Cup of Peace and Friendship (Rd.3)
  • 30 September - 1 October - Moscow Raceway, Volokolamsk, Russia - Moscow Classic GP (Rd.3)

Dzintara Aplis is a similar Baltic series, while the Cup of Country is a new from 2017 series to spread the Moscow Classic GP across the Russian tracks.

The categories of racing are made to resemble the late Soviet categories:

Formula 1300 (Formula Easter)
Formula 1600 (Formula Mondial)
Volga / Volga+ / GAZ 21 (depenging on the engine and car model - GAZ 24, GAZ 21)
Zhiguli Standard / Zhiguli 1300 / Zhiguli 1600 / Zhiguli+ (depending on the engine and the level of preparation)
Moskvich 1600 / Moskvich 2000 / Moskvich+ (depending on the engine and the level of preparation)
Foreign cars (subcategories for Mini and VW Beetle)
Time Attack

Since the field consists mostly of Soviet cars (following the idea of the series), the foreign vehicles are in minority and this year we have seen Ladas racing against Porsches, Minis and Fiat X1/9, which was quite entertaining.

With all the above, MCGP and CPF would welcome the new participants, with a special interest in Eastern bloc cars (Skoda, Dacia, Zastava, Polski Fiat as well as formulae) to reproduce the original CPF fields. Other cars would gladly be considered as well, the organizers would be glad to find a place for other historic racers in the fields. The entries are already coming in, so it's about time to think. The strict rules are:
  • Carburettor engine
  • Compliance with safety requirements. A homologated rollcage and fire extinguisher system (FIA Appendix J), racing seats, racing helmet and overalls (HANS optional, but recommended), no less than 4-point safety belts, electronics shutdown system

This year all participants from abroad (Germany, Ukraine, Belarus) have all successfully passed the customs (in both directions ), which should not be a problem in 2017 as well, if one would wonder.

Here is a little glimpse at the first two rounds of the 2016 Moscow Classic GP:

Here is an official MCGP website (sadly, so far only in Russian, but you can address myself via PM for help in clarification - I am not part of the team, but I am in touch with them): mcgp.su

The first 2017 round entry list (early in formation - more than 200 cars are expected) is available by this link:

Well, thank you for your attention and, hopefully, see you next year!

Great stuff, Alexander. Love the saloons, some of which look really well prepared. Please keep us posted.

Very interesting article. Which car provided the basis for the gearbox?

Thank you, Alan! Traditionally, TARK cars featured a gearbox based on a production unit of ZAZ 968 Zaporozhets - a small displacement Soviet car.
