John Leek
One of the unsung heroes of northern club motorsport, John Leek, sadly died on Sunday. John was responsible for helping design and build some of the iconic special saloons and special GT cars, mainly from the 1970s to the 1990s. One of his best known comrades was Tony Sugden, who campaigned a very quick Skoda, which was based on a March monocoque chassis converted by John and fitted with a Cosworth YB turbo engine..

I was only reading about John Leek and his creations a little before Christmas. I was searching out of curiosity about the Sugden Skoda because that was one magnificent beast. I was trying to find pics and footage of the car and if it is still in use.

John Leek's funeral is on Wednesday 27th February in Pontefract West Yorkshire. Please PM me if you want to attend - all racers are welcome. There looks like being a good turn out of racing people and listening to the racer's talk afterwards in the bar as we celebrate his passing should be well worth the long trip for some.
Am still in regular touch with Tony and Rose Sugden, Tony still has a Nat A Race Licence and is keen to drive the last car John built. Tony's last Skoda (red) has been stripped down and sadly is still awaiting rebuild. Marcus Pye has written a piece on John in this week's Autosport under Humble Pye for those interested. John was a dear friend and is greatly missed. |

For the chap seeking photos and footage of the red Sugden/Leek skoda suggest you email Marcus Pye who did a full 3 page feature in Autosport which I think was titled Czexchmate featuring him driving 3 skoda special saloons at Oulton Park. There is a picture of the three cars currently on Marcus Pye's Facebook, and I think he's coming up to the funeral next week.
Marcus described Suggy's Skoda as the best handling car he'd ever driven and remembers it to this day! Happy days back then... |
