The idea of a car that can drive itself may be safer for the occupants but what is the point. Generally this is why I prefer to ride rather than drive. There is an immediancy to the experience, you don't forget you are part of the countryside through which you travel. This heightens the experience comnpared to driving a modern saloon. A vehicle which does its' best to issolate the driver from their surroundings with climate control airconditioning, automatic gearboxes, large expensive CD Players/ Radios, power brakes & steer. Cup holders, vanity mirrors etc etc.

This people is not driving this is steering.

On a motorcycle your input is vital to the journey and your safety.

Well stated, Mr. Moffat. The greater involvement required to pilot a cycle is what makes riding so exhilerating. Its the same focus that makes driving in competition such a high.

While I agree that a self-driving car is intellectually a ridiculous object, as a person who can't drive a car any more and can't afford a driver, I wouldn't mind having one of those at all!

I ride very infrequently, and today I had the pleasure of riding into Boston with a co-worker to go to a seminar. I got queasy. If I drive, I don't, but if I ride, I really feel quite ill. My sister who drives like a bat-out-of-heck suffers from the same malady.

I am just the reverse. I can ride with someone driving 140 mph down a mountain road and not turn a hair - and I have done it - as well as with someone driving the Lamborghini alogn the Amalfi Drive, which is nothing but corkscrews, on the wrong side of the road most of the time at about Mach 3, and still eaten my dinner at the end of the drive.

But when I have had to drive myself I arrive in a state of exhaustion and have to have a medicinal brandy or so before I can eat a thing.

It's a control thing, I suppose. I don't know.
