Marshall equipment
Hey fellow marshals,
I've been marshalling for years but have always borrowed most marshal equipment of friends etc... I need to buy my own stuff but I'm having a mind blank. Can anyone put a list of what stuff you have? Cheers |

One "L"
Well,
My stuff consists of..... 1 x clipboard with "I'm Very Important" written on the back 1x Whistle (I am a Specialist as well as Track) 1 x Whistle Pea (vital to make above function) 1x Spare whistle pea (just in case) 1x over complicated stopwatch that I do not understand, and with an alarm that goes off at 12pm everyday whatever you do. 1 x Set of Overalls cut off at legs (due to challenged personal altitude) 1 x pair of 6 fingered gloves (it's a genetic thing) 1 x Baseball cap with "Motorsport" written on it (Oxymoron alert! - it is a "baseball cap") 1 x pair of 'ard looking bovver boots - with steel toecaps (never understood that - so it's vital to protect all 6 toes on one foot, but Ok to squash the rest of your foot hmmmm ) 2x pair of socks for above 1x hole in toe for above 1x odd sock knocking about at bottom of rucksack 1 x set of apparently non water-proof waterproofs in grubby orange 1x 6000000000Nm 40 tonne pull mountain carabiner for hanging said non waterproof waterproof jacket on fence 1x Portable Collapsible Canvas Armco Barrier 1x Non functioning Scanner 2x AA Batteries - dead flat and leaking over sarnies - for above 1 x Pen - with dried ink 1 x waterlogged pad 1 pair cool looking sunglasses (hardly used - British Summer) 1 x spare boxer shorts (preferably brown) 1 x tin of warped sense of humour 1 x tin of the greasiest most horrible factor 4000 sun cream you can get 1x Fake tan - to counter the factor 4000 1x "Bertie" the pet beetle 1x box or rucksack to carry all of above (must have special magic pocket where things go never to be seen again - apart from that cheese sandwich which seems to re-appear from nowhere 3 1/2 weeks later) 1x set of completely random stickers for above Sorry ......devil in me couldn't resist.. More seriously...
More seriously
Well, it sort of depends on what you are doing (say Specialism or Track) , how you travel/stay over and what you are comfortable with and spending. It is all a bit subjective. Really, for the pure marshalling side you don't need much equipment at all - basically same as you borrow. Buy what is comfortable - fits and is in right price range for you. The vital things are to remember to stay as dry and warm as poss whatever the weather, protect yourself as much as poss from hazards (hot objects, sprained ankles, other marshals with sh*t sense of humour) and that's it in a nutshell. Paring it down to basics all you need is: Overalls - protect your clothes and be "one of the gang" (though even these are not vital tbh - you'll already know not to clash with flag colours) Boots - decent, preferably steel toe caps, must protect ankles, preferably as waterproof as poss Decent underwear inc thermals Decent gloves to protect from sharp edges and hot exhausts etc (popular are welding gauntlets - cheap as chips but nasty when wet - I carry two or three pairs and change) Good hat for sun and rain Sun cream As good as waterproofs (normally hi-viz) as you can get In a nutshell that is all you need - oh and lunch as well. If a specialist add a clipboard, pens, whistle and stop watch. Everything else is pretty subjective and personal choice |

Do not bring or attempt to eat bananas, hot drinks, or ice creams. Never fall asleep, or sit down with a vacant expression on your face, avoid falling over, and never wear a silly hat .................there are photgraphers about!

If you're a BMMC member, thanks to very generous subsidies you can get VERY cheap overalls! Log in on the BMMC website for details.
