Gigawave Pulls Out

Just read this in the lastest Autosport Magazine (31/12/2009).

Quote:
Gigawave Pulls Out
The British Gigawave team, which was to have represented Nissan in next year's FIA GT1 World Championship, is to close its doors.

The decision leaves Nissan looking for a European agent as well as a new team to run a pair of V8-engined GT-Rs in 2010. Gigawave, which was Nissan's development partner in 2009, was due to have coordinated sale of cars and spares for the Japanese manufacturer.

Gigawave Motorsport had yet to confirm its plans as AUTOSPORT closed for press before Christmas, but it is understood that financial problems are behind the move.

Gigawave joined the FIA GT Championship in conjunction with Barwell Motorsport at the end of 2007. It then contested the full series in its own right with an Aston Martin DBR9 in 2008.

The Swiss Racing Team is pushing ahead with its plans to run a pair of Nissans in the championship next year.
Their website is no longer on about the team either, it is now on about the cameras etc.

Now that is not good when a manufacturer aligned team shuts. Am I correct in saying Nissan were the only manufacturer to build to the true new GT1 rules?

Does this mean no more Nissan GT1?

That is a shame, I enjoyed watching the Nissan this year.
Hopefully someone else will step up and run the European end.

I assume from their website that it is just Gigawave Motorsports that has stopped and Gigawave the RF/camera etc company is still going.

^^ they did, and they were a pretty decent team too - competitive in FIA GT, won the Silverstone LMES race (against only 2 others, admittedly) - a pretty solid outfit, Mr Stepney helped with that for sure.

Shame, the head of Gigawave, Mr Gigawave (not his actual surname, I can't spell that!), is a pretty decent chap - met him in Adria last year, very nice, happy to show you around etc - I even got a look inside the truck that does the feed for the TV/GT1live.tv, whilst they were doing a live broadcast!

Well, this is a little serious as the Gigawave team didnt just run the cars, they also were the Europe, Middle East and American concession of Nismo Motorsport so were charge with selling the GT-R GT1 and it's associated spares. I have no doubt that Nissan will find someone else to do this task and there already are 2 GT-R GT1s destine for Swiss Racing. But still, cant be good for the GT1 championship

The Gigawave car is owned by Nissan so we might still see a "factory" team car race in the FIA GTs. Lets face it, it sounds like GT1 cars a thin on the ground so the SRO are pretty much going to allow Nismo to run a factory car.

I know the GT-R is the Halo car for Nissan but i always felt that time and developement would have been better suited to developing a GT2 spec 370z. The GT-Rs both in SuperGT and GT1 bare little resemblance to the road going car hell they dont even use the same engine!

Yes Nissan are in discussions with potential new partners. Let's hope they can get this done fairly quickly.

Yes, he was. As has been shown in the Flavio case, the FIA cannot ban team members as there is no contract between them and the series. The FIA had a press release advising teams not to hire him but couldn't out right ban him and to honest, he was just a disgruntled employee. He GT racing isnt as liable to handing over the designs of a car!

The FIA lifted their recommendation against both Nigel Stepney & Mike Coughlan back in Feb 2009 http://www.f1fanatic.co.uk/2009/02/0...-and-coughlan/

A shame to see Gigawave close down... Any other Euro Motorsport factory willing to work out the dough to produce GT1 Skyline??? I sure hope so.

They (Sumo) were bought by a company called JR Motorsport who prepare Race Evo X's and rally cars among other things, based in a multi million pound facility in East Sussex. Id highly doubt Nismo would pick someone who didnt know what they were doing!

Autosport magazine has two news items, one says that Nissan have signed a new team to run their GT1 car and immediately below that another item says that Mr Stepney has resigned as a Director.

Coincidence?

We shall see before too long. I suspect their decision making had something to do with who would foot the bill on such short notice.

I agree, and i'll reserve judgment until the first race but thats a huge leap for any team to take (competing in an FIA International Series no less) let alone one with very little national race experience.

JR Motorsport used to run in Time Attack is i remember correctly?!?!

http://www.jrm-group.com/servicesmenu.html - (not yet updated, probably a new site will be built for the GT1 team). They have run Group N Mitsubishi rally cars on behalf of Mitsubishi and built a fairly wild drag racing Evo:

They ran their Evo X in a round in 2009 and are behind the Evo X series in 2010 - see here
