Best rim width
Hi, i have acquired some A048 185/60 R13 to go on my Mk 2 escort for track days. I am going to buy some spare wheels to put these on but wondered what rim width would give the best performance?
I currently have 7j wheels but the yokohama website says it recommends a 6j. I assume that the best width to use is 6j as recommended by yokohama? Thanks |

If the car is purely for the track don't go with the Yokohama web site recommendations. Their web site recommendation is pretty much the same as they would recommend for the same size road car tyre. That's so that if anybody uses them on the road they'll get reasonable comfort levels and good compliance to the road for all conditions and types of usage. That's straight from the horse's mouth. Form the conversations I've had with them, for a pure track car, going with wider rims will give better side wall support virtually to limit of how wide a tyre fitter can get them onto the rim. Having said that, I've only used R15 tyres, so maybe someone with track experience on your particular size might give more specific advice....

I would go for 6 I/2 anything bigger than 7 will start to alter the tread flatness and you would have to increase the pressure to compensate.

Also you may have trouble inflating them if you go too big. I tried to fit some 205 60 15 Dunlop Formula R's to my 8" Rims but they wouldnt blow up no matter what we tried. The 205's wanted a 7" rim and no bigger so I would say Gordon is spot on.

I use to run 205/60/13 A048 on a 7 in rim on my old Suzuki and it was perfect and there are quite a few Escort runners here who do the same
Although I am sure you could do it I think the 185 would be too much of a stretch, I would say keep your wheels change your tyre |
