Evolution of the LM class numbers since the beginning of the century
So since I had nothing better to do I decided to make some LM graphs. These are figures of the class entrants that made the qualifyings since the turn of the decade ie 2000-2014.
Also here's some LMGT numbers I put together earlier on the Porsche vs Ferrari thread: --- Non-Ferrari & non-Porsche GT entries in Le Mans since the turn of the decade 2014 - 06 of 27 **** (PRO: 2x Corvette + 2x Aston, AM: 2x Aston) 2013 - 11 of 26 (PRO: 2x Corvette + 2x Viper + 3x Aston, AM: 2x Corvette + 2x Aston) 2012 - 06 of 22 (PRO: 2x Corvette + 1x Aston, AM: 2x Corvette + 2x Aston) 2011 - 10 of 28 (PRO: 2x Corvette + 2x BMW + 2x Lotus + 1x Aston; AM: 1x Corvette + 1x Aston + 1x Ford) 2010 - 15 of 26 (GT1: 2x Corvette + 1x Aston + 1x Saleen + 1x Lambo + 3x Ford, GT2: 2x Corvette + 2x BMW + 1x Aston + 1x Spyker + 1x Jaguar) 2009 - 08 of 23 (GT1: 4x Corvette + 1x Aston + 1x Lambo, GT2: 1x Aston + 1x Spyker) 2008 - 12 of 22 (GT1: 4x Corvette + 4x Aston + 1x Saleen + 1x Lambo; GT2: 2x Spyker) 2007 - 18 of 28* (GT1: 5x Corvette + 6x Aston + 2x Saleen + 1x Lambo, GT2: 2x Spyker + 2x Panoz) 2006 - 13 of 26* (GT1: 3x Corvette + 4x Aston + 1x Saleen + 1x Lambo; GT2: 2x Spyker + 2x Panoz) 2005 - 08 of 23* (GT1: 2x Corvette + 2x Aston; GT2: 1x Spyker + 2x Panoz + 1x TVR) 2004 - 05 of 23* (GTS: 2x Corvette; GT: 2x TVR + 1 Morgan) 2003 - 10 of 25* (GTS: 2x Corvette + 2x Saleen + 2x Viper + 1 Pagani, GT: 1x Spyker + 2x TVR) 2002 - 11 of 22* (GTS: 2x Corvette + 4x Viper + 3x Saleen, GT: 1x Spyker + 1x Morgan 2001 - 10 of 20*** (GTS: 2x Corvette + 4x Viper + 3x Saleen, GT: 1x Callaway) 2000 - 08 of 22 **/*** (GTS: 2x Corvette + 6x Viper, GT: -) * 550 and 575 counted as Ferrari, obviously ** 912 Turbo counted as Porsche, obviously *** no Ferrari of any kind entered so only against Porsche **** assuming no changes --- Non-Porsche/Non-Ferrari GT Percentages in Le Mans since the turn of the decade 2000 - 36,3% ** 2001 - 50,00% ** 2002 - 50,0% 2003 - 40,0% 2004 - 21,7% 2005 - 34,7% 2006 - 50,0% 2007 - 64,2% 2008 - 54,5% 2009 - 34,7% 2010 - 57,6% 2011 - 35,7% 2012 - 27,2% 2013 - 42,3% 2014 - 22,2% * * assuming no changes ** no Ferrari of any kind entered so only against Porsche --- Number of different GT manufacturers in Le Mans since the turn of the decade 2000 - 3x in two classes 2001 - 5x in two classes 2002 - 7x in two classes 2003 - 8x in two classes 2004 - 5x in two classes 2005 - 7x in two classes 2006 - 8x in two classes 2007 - 8x in two classes 2008 - 7x in two classes 2009 - 6x in two classes 2010 - 10x in two classes 2011 - 7x in one class separated for two subs 2012 - 4x in one class separated for two subs 2013 - 5x in one class separated for two subs 2014 - 4x in one class separated for two subs "Enjoy", or something! Did you count the 2011 G56 as LMP1?
Interesting to see, i'm a bit shocked to see that my first visit in 2008 had almost half a grid of LMP1 and last year/now "just" 8-10 cars. |

It's not like Prospeed was classified as G56 either last year And aye 22 cars would be the size of it's own series... edit: could mods kindly change the last word of the thread name to century, thanks |

LMP2/675 line shows two things: how well the 2001 rain disguised unreliability... and how stunning Strakka's run in the 2010 race actually was.

Yes but by 2010 LMP2 really wasn't the old explosion-imminent category anymore (in fact P1 reminded more of it due to loads of accidents and unreliability), and GT1 had been restricted and raped to pieces

True on the first count, but I don't think even a Corvette vs Aston GT1 fight at the top of its powers could have beaten the LMP2 winner on that day. Strakka had a spin and a slow puncture under a SC, and that was the whole extent of their unscheduled stops that year...

You're probably right, mid-2000's GT1s would have likely made the HPD look silly @ Mulsanne but Strakka would have had edge overall

Probably would've been 10 years ago if 458 had been introduced then but with BoP now controlling every aspect of the class it doesn't really matter.
Anyway up till 2006 most of the Ferraris in the graph are GT1 550s (/575) and only very little impact from 360, after the introduction of 430 you can really start to see the difference in GT2 model dominance |

Probably...
The interesting thing is that despite 2008 obviously being the prime example of healthy state in sportscar racing everywhere prior the economic downfall, the fallout wasn't really that bad in 2009 - you know year often considered quite dark in these circles. Yeah you had full season ALMS struggling a bit and the big factories only doing the big races but generally the numbers weren't dramatically off from previous year. In fact if you look at those big races there are far bigger gaps elsewhere Same with the previous GT tables |

Indeed. Although could you paint a picture where Sportscar racing goes into recession late and comes out of it late too?
Thinking back to 08 Embassy was clearly the first big casualty, but unpicking which entries fell apart through 09 / 10 and looking at reasons might be interesting. |

The following tables offer nothing new, however they have been updated to reflect on the recent P1/P2 + Dunlop changes for this year's LM:
