We'll have to strike out Moffat. He's not Australian, he's Canadian

Regardless he's been there for 40 years and that's good enough for me. I don't think you could ever name only one Greatest Driver. Probably my favorites would be Brock, Johnson and Lowndes. Drivers like Moffat, Perkins, Seton and Ambrose would have to rate an honorable mention. |

You would have to include Brock Moffat Jim Richards Pete Geoghegan Bob Jane Norm Beechey in the mix - personally Geoghegan was the best I saw.

Skaife is definatly one of the best look at the record books. Brock, LP, Dick, Moff, Geohegan, Beechey, Jane, Jimmy Richards all palyed a big part in touring cars and were great drivers from what i've heard. due to being only young and only seeing Brocky, Jimmy Richards, Skaifey, Dick & LP they would be my favourites and the only one's i can really comment on.
although the way he is going J.Whincup could definatly become one of the best, he is braining everyone and with his team-mate being up there with best having raced with a few of them and he is braining him aswell. definatly the pedigree is there. |

The trouble with stats is they don't tell you the level of competition a person faced, nor the resources a person had available. I would put Brock, Johnson, Moffat, Skaife, Lowndes, Bob Jane, Ian Geohegan, Perkins, Ambrose & Whincup in my top 10, but I couldn't put them in a 1 to 10 order.

These things are always going to be generational. I grew up in the '60s/'70's and will always have great memories of the blokes from that era. However it's not to say that any of the great drivers who followed on from those years were in any way, inferior. For me, it's got to be Stormin' Norman Beechey. He certainly hasn't got the stats of many of the others, but was one of the greatest.

It would be between Brock & Moffat, probably Brock; however they were an undeniable force when teamed together.

Jim Richards comes to my mind first, except for the fact that he's a Kiwi. He's a true driver, lets the team sort out the setups, and gets everything he can out of what he's got.
As for Aussies, Brock of course comes to mind as the ultimate car master. Skaife comes to mind as the ultimate car developer. I think Lowndes will eventually be remembered as the best "bad car" driver ever. People are quick to disregard his championship wins with HRT, but it is much more difficult to disregard his performances in Formula Ford and with 00 Motorsport in the V8s. As for Whincup, there's no question that he is good. But I think he needs more years and success before we can call him one of Australia's greatest. |

The Fatman and the Gentleman share top billing, just in front of Moffat, Lowndes, Dick, Stormin, Skaife, Jane and Bond.

This is SUCH a hard one to talk about. I mean, when you talk about best, do you mean "THE BEST", or the best in our minds??
To work out "THE BEST" you need to look at win/loss ratios, podium rations, strike record from the top 10 and the bottom 20 (or less or more), etc etc. Mathematically, That is a nightmare. The Skaifes, Brocks, Moffats, etc, may have had alot of wins, but there could be one or two bug bears who won 1 from 1 with one pole, or 2 from 2 with 2 poles, etc. Then, of course, Whincup would be up there now, but what about if his career takes the same curve as his illustrius teamate? Maybe we can somehow set up a poll, that looks at periods, and find out from there? |

Have you been living under a rock half your life?? - Next you'll be telling us you don't know who 'Gentleman Jum' is!
"...Ian "Pete" Geoghegan - Nicknamed variously Big "Pete" or "Fatty" (hey, he wasn't small), Geoghegan was from a famous racing family that included his older brother Leo and father Tom. He was the first driver to win five Australian touring car championships. The first was in 1964 in a Cortina, and then four consecutively from '66-'69 were in a Ford Mustang. Dick Johnson and Mark Skaife would match his five but no one has won more. Pete was spectacular around Mount Panorama and won the 1973 Bathurst 1000 (the first 1000-kilometre race there), sharing a Ford Falcon GT with Allan Moffat..."
