Keep in mind that a roll hoop is basically a flat angle, sticking straight up. Any foreign object hitting it straight from the front would basically be caught. A canopy would be sloped and offer the chance of glancing off of whatever the car hits. Not to mention it would provide what could be a crucial last line of defense between the driver's head taking the full energy of an impact (like in Wheldon's case) or not. Would it be 100% foolproof and guarantee against every possible scenario? Of course not, we unfortunately learn time and time again that in motorsports nothing is fully safe but I'm fully confident a closed cockpit would have increased Wheldon's chances a lot.

IndyCar has scheduled a 9pm eastern press conference. (In 12 minutes.) Hoping for the best, but I severely doubt that it’s good news…

Here's hoping this is merely an update on his condition and not the worst...

Edit. It's the worst.

Absoultely dreadful and very saddening.

My condolences to Justin's family and friends.

I can't believe we are witnessing another death in motorsport. Incredibly sad to see Justin go. A great driver who never really got that grand opportunity.

I don't know what is going to happen to Indycar and it's car but this is not what they needed right now.

I'm in shock. I don't know what to say. I didn't even know a piece of carbon was capable of this... which sounds stupid to say now.

Just terrible news.

This is the worst.

RIP Justin Wilson.

The motorsport community will wrap it arms around your friends and family during this incredibly sad and difficult time.

Motorsport is cruel but the sport and Indycar will continue.

Its Indycars time and responsiblity to lead with cockpit safety improvements now.

He's lost control of his car in area, where it had already happened during the race. It wasn't his fault and I'm sure no one in their right mind will point fingers at him.

It's obviously sad to see someone like him go out like that, but I hope that the family can at least take a little grain of solace in the fact that it wasn't such a drawn-out affair like Bianchi's death.

This is awful, can't stop thinking about his family. At least this only took a couple of days instead of the torture of bianchi.

I don't really know where the series is going to go from here.

Feel for Sage. Other drivers have been on his back and his spin was very suspicious at Mid Ohio, now this happens. I hope people give him support as well as a bit of space.
