Fire Extinguisher Servicing

It's that time of year when the belts, seat and extinguishers need checking!

I used to send my extinguisher off to Lifeline to be serviced, but am now struggling to find any of the normal carriers that will accept an extinguisher for transportation as it is pressurised and therefore an explosive risk...bloomin 'elf and safety

Has anyone found someone to deliver extinguisher ?

just package it thoroughly and put 'conflagration damper' as the description.

If your sending it for service then set it off, then It's not pressurised. Also depending how old it is they may not service it any more, if so they do reasonable deals on replacements

Will, both replies so far would work. As Tim's method is a bit messy I just pack them discretely and declare as 'car spares'. I suspect that even when discharged, if you mention 'fire extinguisher' on an internet system it will block any further progress booking the consignment.....

I would add that last services I had done were by DT, who are a Lifeline agent. Saves having to write 'Lifeline' on the parcel, in case the carrier twigs! No difference in efficiency getting job done or timescale......

Now you've mentioned it, it's reminded me have got two more to organise!

Merlin Motorsport at Castle Combe have no problem sending back pressurised extinguishers after they have serviced them...

When I've sent them out, I've not bothered deploying them, but made sure they were adequately packed and sent on a normal parcel service.

Neither do DT, or Lifeline. I guess the difference is that the makers and agents have pre arranged terms with their carriers that include them. If you use someone like web service 'parcel2go' as a privateer you're likely to come up against the problem.

Anyone near enough or passing by can book an appointment with Lifeline to have the service done while they wait.....

Print a new sticker, you wouldn't be the first.

I bought an FE from a local source a few years back for £40. passed scrutineering no problem for clubbie stuff.

A friend of mine who deals in classic Mini stuff sent an old, dismantled BMC Works extinguisher to a customer in Ireland, via Royal Mail, having fully declared it at the local Post Office..........PO Norn Iron scanned the parcel (after it had arrived by airmail!) and declared it an explosive risk, impounded it and destroyed it. Didn't tell anyone, though, and it took him ages to find out what happened to it......

The last extinquisher I had serviced was at a fire extinquisher specialist (industrial type) in York. Dropped off one day and collected the next.
They said they did a few for motorsport but only servicing, not supply.

A lot of us have done the same, but the manufacture will refuse to have anything to do with it subsequently and would rightfully deny any liability if something went wrong. But you could argue that having it serviced cheaply and locally over several years would work out more cost effective, though!

Raceparts in Wallingford do it and are lifeline agents, can do it while you wait if you ring ahead.

You don't need a doctorate from Oxbridge to look at the needle and put a new sticker on

This is a fairly common mis-conception of what a correct motorsport service comprises, however for Lifeline AFFF extiguishers for example a service comprises emptying the bottle, removing the valve assembly, washing and visually inspecting the bottle, dip tube and other components, refilling with new extinguishant, refitting the valve assembly and pressure gauge using new O-rings and re-pressurising with nitrogen. Agreed the process is not massively complex process but it does require care, diligence and the right equipment and spares.
Most industrial extinguisher services comprise the weigh/pressure check and sticker mentioned, hence why they are not recognised as a proper service by the manufacturer.
One bonus of the more thorough motorsport process is that if you have a mechanical AFFF extinguisher which is going to be refilled anyway you can empty it yourself before returning it to the service agent and save both weight and any restrictions your carrier may place on transporting pressurised bottles.
N.B. If it is an electrically activated unit you are probably best returning it full as the firing head ia an expensive part and is not replaced as part of a standard service.

Lets face it for what good the new ones are you might as well get out of the car and p**s on it !!
And before someone starts slagging me off I have been there, and if it wasn't for a mate that happened to see my car still alight when the on-board one emptied itself on the flames and did sod all he ran up with an old pyrene one and put it out !!!!

Does anyone know for sure if in case of using a full manual device we have to remove the handle pin before racing? Its not the same thing as automatic or semi automatic thing.

YES! In UK it will normally be checked in pre-grid by a scrutineer before qualifying and race.....
