MG faster than Audi...

I read on Autosport.com that MG broke the lap record at Sebring held previously by the Audi R8 at the end of last year.

Anything to read into?

MG defintely ran faster but there were some extenuating circumstances as well. The track has been completely repaved and is now smooth instead of rough and choppy. While I think the MG is still going to be faster, this did contribute to the new record.

Yeah, every report I've read/heard has suggested that the MG is gonna be quick, I just hope they can make progress with reliability.

It would be great to see both the Bentley and MG teams pushing all the way this year, all we need now are Jaguar and Aston to make an appearance and things could really get interesting.

Don't read toooooo much into this. The MG team is still looking for a big sponsor, so quick lap times won't hurt them there. There are no scrutineers around during testing, so we don't know if the the car is up to weight, running the proper air restrictors or whatever. And, of course, it would just be too easy to, errrrr, exaggerate your lap times to the press.

It is still a good sign that they are streaking along so well, but it is a little much to think they have the resources to topple the Audi steamroller. I will be happy to be wrong because an underdog (especially coming from the suppposed "slower" class) win would make a great story. And an MG win would really put the sport back into the limelight.

And why are they paving Sebring? That place is supposed to be nasty. What are they trying to do, turn the place into a proper racetrack?

As Dr. Austin says, test times are a bit suspect. However, Kristensen is reported to have run 1:46.971 in the Champion Audi (pre-delivery shakedown). That is about 2 seconds quicker than last year's pole and 1.6 seconds faster than the MG ran.

The lap time has been removed from yesterday but the gist of the story is still there.
