Only a modern LMP1 car (from about 2008 onwards) could conceivably beat that right now as far as sportscars go.

I also think that IMSA GTPs were faster than the current IMSA cars around the endurance layout with the boot.
That was my thinking, I didn't know any modern open wheel series ran there. The wikipedia page already has JvO's qualifying on the lap record list, but it doesn't say what configuration each of the other records used.

Just had the chance to watch qually. Love the livery on the 55 and the flag shark fin on the 60 along with the shiny bits.

No surprise in GTLM.

Looks like I won't be able to watch tomorrow. Hope to catch highlights soon and maybe listen in...

The track record is 1 minute, 28.1322 seconds set by Ryan Briscoe in 2009.

Read more: http://autoweek.com/article/indycar/...#ixzz4DJHcuc52

Here's pole times from GTP era:

1988:
83 Nissan GTP ZX-T Brabham / Morton 1:34.737
1989:
84 Nissan GTP ZX-T Chip Robinson (USA) 1:35.878
1990:
98 Eagle HF89 Toyota Drake Olson (USA) 1:34.161

Looks like in 91 they started using the short course.

Thanks man! So cars are faster than last few years, but not comparable to past

Shows what junk the Continental tires are as insisted by the rules. In 2009, Grand Am ran on Pirelli rubber.

All of those times are before the inner loop, so they aren't comparable.

1993 they ran the current well, order of corners anyways for all that's worth now that the curbs are 10' wide and backed by pavement, but qualifying was wet. 1:39.011 fastest lap of the race.

Of course if you go look at what Watkins Glen was like back then it used to be a track that you could barely put a wheel outside of the white lines (if at all in a prototype), whereas now you can easily run all 4 off and then some all over the place. Even if it only got you 1/10 per abusable corner (and it's definitely significantly more than that in places) that would be nearly a second.

Ah yes, 92 is when the bustop was added.

Most tracks are like this now, where you have more room for error, but these should be comparable:

2002:
Riley & Scott Mk III Ford Butch Leitzinger (USA) 1:39.104
1998:
Riley & Scott Mk III Ford Dorsey Schroeder (USA) 1:39.171
1997:
Ferrari 333 SP Andrea Montermini (I) 1:38.573
1996:
Ferrari 333 SP Max Papis (I) 1:39.684
1995:
Ferrari 333 SP Mauro Baldi (I) 1:41.266
1994:
3Ferrari 333 SP Eliseo Salazar (RCH) 1:43.486

Years missing were either wet or when there wasn't a proto race held.

Times for the Grand Am DPs were low to mid 1:40s, with the fastest in 2010:

Riley Mk XX BMW Pruett / Rojas 1:40.562

The Eagle Toyotas didn't really have to try in 1993; I can easily believe that they could have turned a 1:31, or even a 1:30, in qualifying trim in the dry. The Miami and Lime Rock records, and a few others, were set in 1993. Also, Davy Jones went around the Glen in 1992, with the Innerloop, faster than Bernd Schneider went around in 1991, without the chicane.

In recent testing, the Indy Cars were lapping the long course in the 1:24s, so the outright lap record is in for a smashing.

At various tracks, the 2008 and 2010 LMP1s demonstrated themselves to be quicker than IMSA GTP and WSC Group C machinery. The current LMP1s are capable of going faster still. I'd guess a current factory LMP1 could lap the Glen, in Qualifying, in the 1:27s.

I think they'd be even faster. But you'd have to do the math in terms of allowed hybrid energy and fuel flow rate. From the IndyCar Road America race, the race lap times were around 1:48's. I mentioned in another thread that the Audi R10 back in 2008 qualified there with a 1:46.9, Indycar just qualified with a pole time of 1:42.2 (a 1:42.1 was fastest qualifying lap in a previous session). It'll be interesting to see what the times are from Road America when these guys visit. Even more next year when the cars are faster.

The existing IMSA SCC Prototype lap record was set in 2014 at a 1:55.166. Even the LMP1 record from 2012 was a 1:50.191, and I can't possibly see the current cars being able to go that fast.

The Indy Cars lack outright power and top-end speed, so they were further from the old CART mark at Road America than they would be, and are, at some other courses. The CART record, from 2000, is a 1:39.866.

With the new LMP2s, I wonder a little if Daytona could be overtaken, particularly by Mosport Park or Watkins Glen, as the fastest circuit on the IMSA calendar.

Thanks! The best post of the thread. I always struggle with the time zones, and unfortunately imsa.com doesn't help too much.

btw. now that imsa uses alkamelsystems, you should check during the race if their standard livetiming works. It has got sector times, top speed, driver tracker etc. livetiming.alkamelsystems.com/imsa

The most recent dry pole for Super Formula at Fuji is slower than WEC, so I would expect LMP1 to be at least around IndyCar at Road America. WGI is a bit harder to call.

Happy race morning everyone. I do find it strange why they start at 10 am on Sunday morning. I always found that strange. Some of us do still go to Church! I'll miss the first 2 hours of the race at least.

Same here. Except thanks to it being on fs1, I'll be dvr'ing it and watching it from beginning starting later. Might even catch up to real time with all the commercials, lol.

My suggestion to you would be to record it.

Very impressed that the whole race will be on tv. Unless they pull a le mans and preempt it for something else..... I watched probably 21 hours of that race with the last 7 or so on dvr, only to get 2 hours from the and for them to switch to golf. Good thing the last two hours weren't all that important....................................... Here's hoping they don't screw me again.

No cable for me. So I rely on RLM, llive timing and the live on-boards during the race itself. Which is fine since the broadcast is on youtube 2 days later so its two ways to follow it but only if you are there. Being there in person is best I was at the Glen in upstate NY last year not so this time though.

Does anyone know when the race starts? I would have expected it to start a few minutes ago, but apparently not.

US time zones always seems problematic to me (and Daylight saving times here and there don't help)
