Question about numbers

Today, we are used to cars having the same numbers for every race.

But, from what I can tell, as recently as 25 years ago, the numbers on the sides of cars would change from one race to the next. Can anybody explain why this was done, and why it was stopped?

The numbers were allotted by the organisers, which is why they varied. Guess that they were fixed because Bernie wanted it........

Yeah I think it was 1970ish when they became fixed, if you want anything more specific I can look it up for you later.

The numbers of cars were stated for teams first time during 1973, since European GP at Belgium. In 1974 they made a reshuffle according to the places that teams have in the last WC, only having changes with teams what were crowned WCC or with new teams. Since 1996 the numbers of cars are according the position they had in last year, like in F3000 since its beggining.
