The prizemoney was still very generous (compared with circuit racing at the time) and I could easily believe Thunderdome was not viable. It's a pity though. You would have to wonder what the interest would be these days, with the Ambrose influence of increasing the awareness of NASCAR. Imagine guest Thunderdome appearances nowadays by NASCAR drivers during their off-season. Trouble is, you would need a oval in Sydney and/or Brisbane to maintain a competitor base. That sort of nearly happened at Lakeside... |

In any case, football is like a religion in Victoria and has absolute blanket coverage, probably like nowhere else in the world for any sport so it is hardly a fair, real-world comparison. The advantage of being national is that sponsors can involve clients and staff in several states, not just one, which makes it a better sell. |

Time for the annual Calder Park Thread update
The Devil must be out buying winter woolies at the Boxing Day sales this year because Hell must be freezing over. The opening round of the CAMS Australian Rally Championship is being held at Calder Park from March 1st - 4th next year. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Dxa86...layer_embedded More info can be found here http://www.rally.com.au/index.php?op...239&Itemid=199 The event will effectively be a stadium event using most of the National Circuit, Thunderdome, Car Parks and various access tracks around the complex in different configurations for the various Special Stages over the four days. it's being designed to bring forest rallying to the masses by holding it close to a capital city without having to stand in a forest in the middle of nowhere with no real facilities for spectators. There has also been a few CAMS sanctioned car club events held in recent times as well. |

This is an attempt by the rally people to expose more people to their version of motorsport as rallying has been struggling here in recent times. I'm hearing you on the traditions of the sport but I think good on them for trying something different at one of their rounds to raise awareness of what they do. |

The closest the general public normally get is parking all the cars at Fed Square and then driving them out to the forest to start playing properly and this wont grab the publics attention.
By having an event this close and proper facilities for the punters it might just attract a few to venture out to the forest to see it for real. Here's a Coca-Cola advert from the early 1970's featuring Rallycross filmed at Calder Park. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=F8AQqKiqSp0 |

In addition to the CAMS events, it now looks like ANDRA competition could be back at Calder as well.
ANDRA have sanctioned both 1000 ft. and 1/8th mile racing for the Pro Series and have already spoken with Ian Macarthur about running at Calder again. I think that in both CAMS and ANDRA cases the injection of some new people may have smoothed the waters a bit. Hopefully we can see State level racing back there soon as well so we can have more than just the ridiculous 4 rounds at present. |

Drag Racing has never had a drama pulling a crowd at Calder. Missed out today thanks to a kids b'day, but friends at the track said over 200 cars entered and a huge crowd. Maybe 15,000? |

Still a very good turnout. Once again the same old problems reared their ugly head. The time taken to clean up the track after even the most minor spill or centreline light contact was way longer than most other tracks. Some of the Sydney media guys who had never been to Calder before said it was the worst they'd ever seen. Darren Morgan admitted that the races tonight were just exhibition passes and they were just trying to get through without breaking anything. Still put on a hell of a show though, but sadly I couldn't hang around for the after dark run as the vibration from standing too close to the cars has seriously flared up my back. Also the new ANDRA CEO was there to try and broker a peace deal with Calder but speaking with Bob and Ian at the track they were not exactly in a conciliatory mood. Bob was getting around like a 20 year old. An short, bent, overweight and arthritic 20 year old, but still he probably ended the night feeling better than me. |

Poor old Bob, just doesn't get it anymore I am afraid, it is not about him, it is
(a) making money so that the track survivies (b) bringin in the paying customers (who buy food etc) (c) brining the racers back to Calder he just doesn't get it anymore, he still thinks people give a **** about the political in-fighting, but they don't - move on Bob FFS |

Was Bob sitting in his Winnebago on the infield at the startline?
I heard about the lengthy clean ups, in their defence your going to be rusty at it, when you've only done it twice in 10+ years. Also heard alot of big gaps between runs, with 200 cars this should not have happened I would have thought. Unfortuantly Calder seems to only still exist to serve BJ's ego. Maybe it's time for the decision making to be handed over to Rodney. It's worked for AIR, with ANDRA racing returning there after some upgrades. |

As a former Calder official who has been involved in many a clean up you'd be surprised how many oil downs occur during street meets and there are plenty of them held each year.

Still way too slow though, somes guys complained of only getting 1 or 2 runs. Highlight was a side by side 4sec pass will all the candles lit. Crowd favorite was a 8 second Mercedes Vito van! Fuelers to put on a launch display at Clipsal. http://www.speedcafe.com/2012/02/21/...op-fuel-event/ Bit of promotion for AIR? |

You mean this........
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=bNipnh-IHsE The first number shown on the lower display is MPH and the second is km/h Would be good for Adelaide racers if AIR came back on line properly. |
