AMG Mercedes-Benz

Does anyone else recall the rumours in, what, late '98 that Mercedes was considering sending AMG to CART as a works team to boost their faltering performance in the States? Drivers were rumoured to be Bernd Schneider and Marcel Tiemann, and I, for one, couldn't wait. Anyone have any more detailed recollections?

You're pretty much on the mark, BSchneider fan.

In 1997, Bernd visited Elkhart Lake and was pictured sitting Dario Franchitti's Hogan Reynard-Mercedes and it sparked all sorts of rumours.

Never came to anything though.

I remember that AMG story very well... have been following Schneider in FIA Sportscars with a passion... too bad nothing came out of it...

On a good note though, there is a slight possibility of Mercedes returning to Champ Car when the "new engine formula" comes in (2006), and NA-V10's or V8's will get chosen... little too late for Schneider by then, but André Lotterer or Pierre Kaffer would surely be welcome...

Gary Paffet and Christijan Albers would be Mercedes boys in that scenario most probably.

Yup,... and if Grajewski and Infineon get their act together we might see either Pierre Kaffer or André Lotterer in Champ Car next year ?!

He did a one off in mexico city (for herdez?) becoming one of the youngest starters ever. His performance has trailed off somewhat tho in formula nippon. I would expect albers to be in a jordan before he does champcar, possibly even at hungary if heidfeld goes to williams and glock doesnt step up again.

André Lotterer already was in Champ Car (once) in 2002 Mexico City GP ?!... last year he was working with/for a JAG/Rahal deal but that didn't materialize because Champ Car ditched Germany which Infineon wants... next year we might not get Germany but Infineon might change their stance... btw, Grajewski still has a Lola chassis in his possession...

^ that was a one race deal between Coyne and Grajewski - 2002 was the year when DCR had 69+ drivers on their roster... hihihaha...

would albers do this if he is still leading the dtm championship - thought his focus would surely be on that

errr... don't forget that Monteiro beat out Albers for a test seat - there isn't much hope ($$$) for Albers in F1 ?!

Monteiro? Was that one a promised minardi test that never happened? Albers has pretty good backing now, and has done some test work for minardi and jordan

but, surely 2004 dtm champion is better than a 1 off f1 drive for minardo or jordan
