Most of the people who attend Goodwood haven't got a clue what the programme is and are not aware the racing over the three days is balanced with all the other hoopla thrown in .

Probably less knowledge with the punters at Goodwood than any other sporting event in UK. It's in the entertainment industry based on old cars.

Notwithstanding that a very good three days out

Thanks for reply and apologies for missing the other thread where this has been debated extensively....

...yes it is pretty remarkable that the event sells out without anyone knowing what it is that they're actually going to get to see. Hence question about whether any other event manages to sell out without announcing the line up!

I've based buying Sunday tickets on previous events but, bar the RAC TT and maybe the Goodwood Trophy, the races have been moving around a lot of late so it's pot luck.

I was once besotted with Goodwood but now less so, as I have come to accept that I will probably never be invited to race. John raises the question of knowledgeable punters and I have an amusing relevant and anecdote.......

.....seeing it is the only motorsport event my wife gets in the slightest bit excited about, I'm always on the lookout for tickets every year. I only ever get my hands on a pair tickets very occasionally and despite my knowing all-the-right-people, I am very rarely successful. In 2012, I was really very keen to go as some close pals were racing but even they had no spares that I could buy or be gifted. I tried absolutely everyone including a lot of people whom you will all know personally or otherwise (I shall not embarrass them by naming them) but no luck. In the end I gave up and went down the pub. After my second pint my mate came in off the train - he is the Commercial Director for a world famous London based Premiership football club. We got onto the subject of Goodwood and the absence of tickets thereof.....he looked at me as if I were completely mad......"Goodwood Revival?"...."Tickets?"......."How many do you want?...."......"By the way is it horseracing next week or cars?...."

If it helps - in the latest edition of Classic & Sports Car magazine (September) there is a feature on this year's Revival and it includes a 'race card' giving days but not times for the various races. The Lavant Cup for D-types is apparently scheduled for the Saturday according to the magazine.

Please forgive my ignorance, I don't understand, is it not possible to buy them in advance, or am I just being silly

You're quite right of course but I was not that well organised and, coming from a competitor's background, it was a bit strange actually buying-tickets-like-normal-people - I thought I could just buy them off someone I knew. The point I was trying to make was that the Goodwood Revival is no longer the preserve of motor enthusiasts ......it's just another one of those events that one just has to attend during The Season. And in doing so, the knowledge of your general spectator has dropped. Market forces, etc....

As a competitor one doesn't 'buy' tickets, we pay five times as much via different channels!

Or subscribe to "The Chap" magazine. I do. There, you will learn that it's not just about finding the right material, you get the full knowledge and a few adverts for specialist retailers

Maybe it's the same as for marshals - by the time we find out that our services are not required there are no tickets available for spectating :-(

Ditto ! a great read.

I procured my Harris Tweed jacket 20 or so years ago at a local 'upcycling' emporium. £6 if memory serves. It still fits too!

Is 'Chap' magazine like a posh 'Men Only', with scantily clad chapesses in period oufits?
