Engine cover reg change...?

Why and what are the changed regulations for engine covers in 2004?

What exactly are they trying to do, and how are they changing these cars?

The cover is bigger in profile from the side, to give more sponsor space. Most teams seem to have complied with this simply by having a thin "fin" running diagonally behind the airbox proper. Bit daft really.

I think it was supposed to be for smaller teams to have more sponsorship space? I remember Stoddart and Jordan saying that that wasn't true, however, given the cost of having to deal with regulation changes. It was one of the changes that Stoddart agreed to in return for that "fighting fund" business. Presumably it was mostly to give more sponsorship space to the bigger teams, then.

Are we sure that this change has been incorporated into the rules. I can find no mention of it in the changes for 2004.

The reason we are given for this engine cover rule is for sponsorship space, but it is more than likely a measure of disrupting airflow. This combined with the rear wing rule means it is more difficult in terms of rear downforce.

Let's face it, the engine cover size this year hardly allows for a lot of extra sponsorship space, just slightly bigger logos!!

I wonder where this will eventually lead;

2012 regulation 37.4.67.1(b) : Cars that don't satisfy the afforementioned minimum advertising space will be required to provide a standard tow-bar at the rear of hte vehicle to allow the FIA to attach a triangular advertising trailor.
