A Maestro 1.6 Automatic!

(followed, when that died, by a 1.4 Escort and now a XJ6! Cheaper than the Escort was to buy!!!).

I still have fond memories of the ****box.

1978 Alfetta GTV 2.0l was the first car I owned (sniff, miss that car, written off because some tool didn't look before turning)

But the first car that I drove regularly was a 1978 TE Cortina - 3.3l six cyl auto. jeez it was a pig, but it had a big alloy bull bar and it was as tough as old boots - especially good for early dirt road bulldozing, er driving experience.

1989 Pontiac Bonneville. I got the car from my mom when she bought a 1999 Ford Explorer with Firestone tires, and she gave me the Bonneville. She got the Bonneville from her aunt. Since I've been driving it, the radiator has been replaced, also the fuel pump needed to be replaced. Hell, the driver's seatbelt was replaced. Not one of you believe me about that, but once you saw the car, you would believe me because the car's interior is grayish, buth the seatbelt is red. The car is a piece of sh**.

I learnt to drive on my Dad's Mini Panel Van - had associations with a few cars there after ie Toyota Corolla, Ford Meteor, and a couple of MG Midgets that were really not my own but I drove and then I finally last year bought my own car with my own money and registered to me!! Yippee

Even better it was green. Inside and out. Obviously that doesn't include the rust, or the filler, or the primer, or the fibreglass, or the 'bought the wrong green but used it any way' bits.

Pure quality, 2 years of clonking about, smoking stereos, windscreen wipers held on with string, no door card on the passenger side, no glove box (took it out to get at the dash wiring and never put it back), lights that did main beam or off, brakes that failed completely at one point, timing chain eating through the engine case (still got home though), fuel gauge that always read empty, temperature gauge that was always off the top of the scale, heater that didn't work. Ah the joys of owning a car

It eventually got killed in a collision with a Fiesta (I got punted across the road as it pulled out of a junction in fromt of me). It actually started up first time after the whack - it hadn't done that for months....

I bought another Nova (1400 hatchback) and stripped the old one for spares, it did look a sorry sight (worse than normal). I had the 2nd Nova for a couple of years and then chopped it in against a 306 D Turbo that I'm still scudding about in now (3 years and 2 head ons later).

Everybody should have a total shed as their 1st car, that way when you finally get a good one you appreciate it more.

i would agree with that mate, my renault 19 was a shed and now i appreciate my current car alot more, i even try too keep it in good shape, i could never be bovered when i had that shed of a 19

My first car was a pale Yellow Renault 10. It took 4 guys and there grog to Townsville and back. Unfortunately a few days after being back in Sydney it got killed by a truck and it was sadly missed as it got flogged by all and never broke down once. I saw the light and bought my first rotary in 1982 and have had 8 since then. The resent one is a 1969 10a R100 that I got from an old lady in the neighbourhood and it still has the plastic on the doors. My wife and I are waiting for a RX8 we have ordered. No kids so sports coupe here we come.

Red T-Reg Datsun Sunny 1.2.

The brakes were so bad (apparently) that no-one was brave enough to give me lessons in it (althought I assumed thats what all cars braked like!)

Sold it after a couple of months to get a W-Reg lime green

Ford Cortina 1.6. Oh, the street cred of having a huge 1600cc engine when all my mates had 1300's.

We used to go to high school in my friends purple torana!! Was a special that one...handbrake never worked so we'd have to park it bumped up to something - usually a tree or kerb and hope it was there for the journey home!!

My first was a 1964 Triumph TR4i. It began my love/hate relationship with all things British Leyland.

My next car was an unrestored but immaculate 1947 Chrysler New Yorker Highlander w/ a straight 8 and a fluid drive tranny. It got about 8 miles per gallon but I could have parked the Triumph in the back seat and a VW in the trunk.

My first real bike was a Triumph Trophy, early 70's vintage. Although by then I had spent some time on my friends BSA, Norton and BMW. I won't count the Honda 50 I had in my "training wheel" days.
